What should have been a glorious return to Bloomfield Oval for Barnstoneworth Athletic was soured by the collapse of a structure significant to the game. The hasty relocation of the game to Brabham Park still brought about the desired result for Barnies as they won 2-0 against a resurgent PCYC.

The relocation seemed to affect the rhythm and desire of Barnies and they put in another poor performance but escaped with the win. We have come to expect woeful finishing from Barnies in their history and such expectations were fulfilled with gusto on Saturday.

The first half provided numerous opportunities which Shane Wennerbom failed to convert. In his last game before a reportedly multi-million dollar transfer to the Armed Services team, he was looking to shine. The shining in the first half came from the daylight between the ball and the goals.

A scoreless first half looked certain to precede a similar second stanza until the timely interjection of Trent 'The Vaz' Brown. Brown, looking surprisingly rejuvenated, ran the legs off the PCYC defence and created more opportunities which were eventually taken. Wennerbom got his farewell goal and Brown was rewarded with one of his own.

The final 2-0 score line was a little flattering for a poor performance and PCYC need to be commended for the way they are building their team this year.

This round completed the first half of the regular season and Barnies deserve their low placing. Many team roster complications have not helped but to be competitive, opportunities need to be taken. We will wait and see if a more settled line up will see them work their way up the table through the latter half of the year.

Farewell to Shane and all the best as Barnstoneworth salute you on your way.
