In contrast to a day that started bleakly but provided sunshine for the match Barnstoneworth Athletic started the day with promise yet ended with little reason for such hope going down 4-2 to East Orange United and still looking for their first win of the season.
The match appeared well balanced until a shot on goal saw Barnies' keeper Ray Selmes at full stretch manage to get his fingertips to the ball only to see it slip through his grasp into the back of the net. The first half saw a few opportunities by both sides that missed the mark and the break was taken at 1-0.
EOU converted a penalty early in the second half to go up by 2. An EOU defender was then feeling generous or was maybe hoping to edge to the top of the Barnstoneworth goal scorers list and slotted a fine shot past his keeper. The 2 goal advantage was restored within minutes however with another shot into the corner of the net. The game opened up now as players were getting tired and confusion left openings. Barnies were not able to take advantage of numerous opportunities and with up to 6 players forward lost any room they might have had to work a goal. A corner was headed home at the other end to dash the failing hopes of the Barnstoneworth faithful.
One last opportunity was presented to newcomer Johnny Chen who made no mistake in passing the keeper in a 1 on 1 to score his first ever goal. It looks quite possible that this will be the first of many.
Finally, if any Barnies players and their families want to find out more about our Barnstoneworth heritage, or want to watch a couple of other decent teams battle for a prize, then come along to the Peter Pocknall Pavilion in William St this Saturday 12th May at 8pm for an FA Cup night of super nova proportions. It will be $5 a head to cover hiring the hall and some of the shortfall from last year. It's BYO drinks and we'll probably see who wants to chip in for pizzas or whatever. If you don't know Heggarty A., Heggarty R,… then you must not miss this. The match will kick off at midnight so sleep well the night before. Call Ewan Powell for more information.
