In front of yet another sellout crowd Barnstoneworth Athletic have lost for the first time at Stadium Barnstoneworth this season. In a spirit that might herald a winning finish to the season Barnstoneworth fought bravely to go down 2-1 to Canobolas Pink.
Every ticket for the match was sold faster than those for the Australia v Lions match at Stadium Australia and there was not a spare seat at the stadium. There are rumours that the seating capacity may be doubled next season after the huge response this season.
"Yeah, we obviously love playing here" said manager Ewan Powell. "The home fans are great and it was disappointing to lose here for the first time this season. But we done good though and it was a sterling effort from the lads. I'm real proud of their performance today. Results don't really matter for us and I think we managed to look the Pink Bits in the eyes today which is important."
It was a close affair and Barnstoneworth grabbed the early lead midway through the first half. Donnie Jacobs and Damian Priest are forming a great partnership up front and it led to Priest slotting in a clever goal.
Things were looking good for Barnies as they hassled well in defence and Pink Bits were forced to shoot from well out or lost the ball as they were getting closer. Ultimately Canobolas scored twice through persistence with two great goals the second only minutes from the end.
It was looking like Barnies might keep their home record intact but the lowly placed team were unable to keep out the highly fancied Pink Bits. It goes to show how even the competition is this year as most matches have a semblance of competitiveness and it can only be said that soccer was the winner on the day.
