This painting is a masterstudy based on a much better original by Johannes Vermeer. I have always been in awe of the way the Dutch masters, especially Vermeer and my favorite; Rembrandt, were able to capture the human countinence so pristinely while still infusing their own individualism on the work. The result seems almost a snapshot of a moment seen inexplicably through the eyes of another. Because I don't yet consider myself a true painter, I am continuing in my efforts to better understand techinique and style. As an artist I hope that my own sense of individual growth justifies such blatant plagarism of a moment, while giving proper respect where it is due. |
