Rome and Pompei |

When I was 15 I visited Rome for the first time. It was an eye openning experience to be sure. This is a picture of two of my good friends that I took in front of the Coliseum. What we didn't notice at the time of this picture is the fire engines and ladders in the background. They were gathered on account of the jumper who lept from the top of the Coliseum moments after this picture was taken. It was a surreal day! |

After Rome we moved on to Pompei, the city burried in volcanic ash. Back in 93 they had the plaster casts of the victims of Mount Vesuvius out in the rooms of the buildings for public viewing. On my second trip in 98 almost all of the casts were either removed from view or kept in one building. It was truly strange to see such a morbid moment frozen in time and to witness it almost 2000 years later. |
