THE SIGs OFFICER SPEAKS

I hope everyone is enjoying the New Year and that 1998 is just Great!! The Spring SIGs Directory is completed and will be in the March issue of the BULLETIN. For those of you who didn't return the semi-annual update form, your SIG will be listed as "Closed." However, if you are still in operation let me know and I'll note it in an upcoming column.

The deadline for the SIGs Room at the Annual Gathering is coming up soon. If you, or one of your SIG members, wishes to hold a session, let Paula know. even after the deadline passes, we'll still take reservations for the room. However, they will only be accepted if there is an open time slot; and you may miss having the meeting announced in the AG Program.

And, speaking of all that Paula's doing for the SIGs, I want to thank her for posting out this issue of SIGnet for me. I'm still very much in he job hunting mode, and that involves lots of envelope stuffing. I wasn't looking forward to stuffing another 150 or so copies of SIGnet, and Paula graciously volunteered to send it out. Thanks, also, to the other members of the SIG ExComm, Christine and Bunny, who've helped me with feedback on many SIG related matters over the past few months.

For those who are interested, Ive been doing quite a bit of E-Mailing over the past few months. Ive been added to two AMC committees - Risk Management and Leadership Development, and there have been plenty of discussions going on. A few other, lengthy, exchanges of letters/E-Mail have also taken place.

Recently, I worked with a small group on he newly revised PDQ which should be going out with the renewal membership cards and to the longer term members in the near future. Hopefully by early summer AML will have an up-to-date membership interest database to inquire on. Ill let you know when it is up and ready for queries.

A couple reminders about the Mensa Name and Logo:

  • You cant refer to your SIG as "the American Mensa ___ SIG." The proper terminology is "the ___ SIG of American Mensa."
  • The Mensa Name and Logo are not to be used without specific permission of the Mensa Name and Logo Committee. These are covered by copyright and, in this case, it is better to get permission ahead of time than apologize afterwards.
One last comment: You must be a current member of American Mensa to be a SIG coordinator. Last year there were ten or so coordinators who had not renewed their membership by March 31. If you do not plan on renewing, please let me know so that the SIG can either be closed or a replacement coordinator found. Again, my knowing things ahead of time saves a heck of a lot of extra work at this end.

Have a Safe and Enjoyable Springtime!!

CORRESPONDENCE

From Paula Trumble, Assistant SIGs Officer:
Skinner is in charge of, among other things, the SIGs room at the 1998 AG. This is the information hes given me about scheduling. It looks to me like the time choices are 8am, 9am, 11am, 1pm, and 3pm (Thu, Fri, Sat and Sun morn) and that if anyone wants to sign up, theyve got until the end of February to do it.

It might be useful to have this information in he next SIGnet. I hope Ive got it to you in a timely fashion.

From Skinner (via Paula):
Here are some of the guidelines I am working with. The 1st programs start at 8am, the 2nd at 9am. After that they are all on 1 hr cycles. They will still be one hour long. It just allows 30 minutes between programs. I would like you to set your activities up on the same schedule to avoid confusion. At this time I know of 2 programs that need larger space - Hells Ms and the Wine SIG. If anyone else needs larger space I need to know soon. At this point I would like to have some solid info from you by the end of February. The cut off has not been set for the program yet but I would like the information earlier rather than later.

I will figure tables on one side of the room and theater style seating in the rest. If someone wants special arrangements I will need to know that before mid May.

As far as I am going to be concerned what goes on in the SIGs room will be up to you. I will just have to be aware of what is going on to be sure there are no issues with the hotel.

(Ye Ed: From the December INTERLOC [You all DO subscribe to the INTERLOC, dont you? If not, why not? Its free for the asking! You have only to contact AML and ask to be placed on the mailing list!] it appears that Skinner, besides being in charge of the SIG room, is also program chair for the AG. No small job, that! Yo, Skinner! What are you going to do in your spare(?) time over these next few months, breath (G!)?)

From former SIGs Officer Lisa Shea:
Ive set up a web page for SIG coordinators at

http://world.std.com/~sheal/sig/index.html

Note that this was changed after publication of SIGnet. The new and correct address as of 3/1/98 is http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Canopy/1484/sig_index.html

Im working with Andrew to make sure it has everything he wants on it, but let me know if you have any suggestions! I have to find one of my SIGnets to get all the positions right and such.

NEWSFLASH!!

To clarify some things as we go to press - contact Paula about your desired time in the SIG room during the AG NO LATER THAN MAY 1! See the mastfoot for her snail mail and email addresses. She did a beautiful job with last years program; and Im sure shell do equally well this time around.

If you cant go yourself, maybe one (or more) of your SIG members can serve as your stand-in(s). Recruit (or delegate) some volunteers. Skinner indicated he plans to set up tables in the SIG room. Bring/send an armload of your newsletters to be placed in the SIG room as a means of recruiting some new members.

Most important of all - HAVE FUN!

We trust that everyone made it through the holidays in good order - probably a few pounds heavier (G!) The next holiday looming on the horizon is Valentine Day on February 14. May we all get to share the things we enjoy with he people we like the most.

THE FINE PRINT
(AKA: The Mastfoot)

SIGnet, the SIG Coordinators forum, is published approximately four times a year as a vehicle for communication among coordinators of Special Interest Groups of American Mensa Limited coordinators and the American Mensa Committee (AMC), via the SIGs Officer. SIGnet is published with funds provided by the AML as part of the budget approved for the SIGs Officer by the AMC.

SIGnet is provided automatically and free of charge to all SIG coordinators. Other individuals involve din the SIGs Program (Co-coordinators and SIG Newsletter editors) may from time to time (assuming an adequate budget) be extended the opportunity to receive SIGnet on a no-cost subscription basis. Other interested Mensans may subscribe to SIGnet at $6.00 for six issues. All opinions expressed in SIGnet, including those of the SIGs Officer, are those of the author and not of Mensa or AML, which has no collective opinions.
