Age: 725 earth years
Planet of Origin: Mantissa
Height: 5' 6
Race/Ethnicity: Gallifreyan (the race on Gallifrey who have not undergone the treatment to become Time Lords)
Current race as of Past Returns, Present Imperfections, Future Tense: Gargoyle with recessive Time Lord DNA
Weight: 170 lbs. On Earth
Hair: Dark auburn, and slightly wavy with a few silver streaks.
Eyes: Topaz brown
Skin: Olive complexion, tans easily.
Physical description (humanoid form): Appears as a stocky large framed human female of approximately 35 years old. Wears glasses to correct for nearsightedness due to difficulties in her regeneration. Usually wears hair loose or in french braid. Unlike her counterpart in the other universe, Rayna has no cybernetics. She has the same overall features racially and is genetically identical save the DNA that codes for Regeneration. She named herself Rachel Vitreum upon finding out that there was another "her" existing in the universe. She enjoys wearing a set of brown coveralls that are a vest and high wasted pants that button across the stomach. Wears a red vest with many pockets, sweater cuffs that can be drawn up to connect with the vest as a parka, sturdy moonboots. Also wears glasses, to shade her eyes from excess UV rays. Carries a backpack loaded with odd accouterments for survival on many worlds. Has a cloak she wears when it is cold.
In Past Returns, Present Imperfections and Future Tense, she undergoes yet another startling transformation!
Rachel Vitreum has odd powers that stem from powerful sources. However she is only able to use them in very specific instances due to her lack of desire to train with the Time Lords, and her stubborness to return back to nature. Such abilities she has discovered by accident under periods of stress.
Rachel can manipulate time itself, to a very limited extent. She can only use this ability to breach time space with help from a teleporter. The range is limited, and not always predictable. Also she can slow time around her to create a defensive shield. Sometimes she can speed up growth rates of plants and bodily tissues to help heal. But each use of time taxes her mental concentration to a great degree. The time sense she has can let her detect disturbances in the space time continuum. Also she can receive images from the past or future. These abilities stem from her Time Lord DNA.
She must wear a psychosideric unit that keeps her in the third dimension. Otherwise time itself will pull her back into it. And it would take too much mental energy to stay in reality. Also, the unit soaks up excess time waves and dissipate them in a way she can cope with. Removal of the band will cause time to flux around Rayna, or cause her to slip into hyper space. This temporal power is tied to the Time Lord DNA property of her symbiotic nuclei
The usual Gallifreyan has telepathic abilities. Rachel can send and receive telepathic transmissions only with Callom, psychics or Time Lords. For a Time Lord she is considered less than adept as a telepath. Thus she cannot use telekinesis or telepathy. However, she can block telepathic transmissions by subtily altering her mind frequencies. It renders the psi helpless against her.
Rachel is knowledgeable in several fields of science, including Planetary Geology. In this version she clings to this discipline as a means of identity. Thus she prefers outdoors, close to nature. She abhors technology, preferring to be in contact with natural forces. As a result she is an accomplished survivalist, able to mountain climb, without equipment, on planets with gravity fields of up to five earth G's, and find food in remote environments. Other sciences include Anthropology, Botany, Astro-biology, and some temporal mechanics. However the part of her that was Fiona is submerged, causing some lapses in memory of Rachel's knowledge and memories.
Abilities: (Gargoyle): Unknown to her, Rayna retains recessive Timelord DNA, but the ability to manipulate time is submerged due to dominant Gargoyle genes implanted by Sevarious. She posesses eyes that glow red when enraged, sharp talons for climbing building, and wings for gliding. During the day she must enter stone regeneration which can heal most injuries inflicted during the day. However her gliding ability is extremely ameture due to lack of experience. Nevertheless Rayna's previous skills at mountainclimbing make her far more adept at climbing then even the best of the Gargoyles. She can scale a sheer wall three to four times faster then even Goliath. Also, her enhanced senses more then compensate for her nearsightedness that is retained. She must continue to wear glasses even in her Gargoyle state.
Languages: In humanoid form she inherited the Doctor's ability to speak and translate most sentient languages. However some species the ability will not translate. She knows sign language of some alien species. Now she is a gargoyle she no longer posesses this ability, and it remains dormant. Only those languages she remembers can she speak.
She engages in casual friendships, a bit afraid to let others become close, due to the deaths of those in the past who have become associated with her. As a result she will engage in casual relationships when she assists those most in need. Yet when the crisis is resolved, she will most likely slip away to let the people involved get back to their normal lives. As a result she prefers solitude to large groups. However, she enjoys interpersonal interaction as long as the lines are clear. Sometimes Ray makes close connections in a short period of time, only to dissapear because her wanderlust draws her to the next crisis. This need to help others stems from her guilt over her past crimes. She often will define herself in the eyes of those she has helped.
Currently she has no mate, but is considering a relationship with either Hudson or Brooklyn. However she will engage in casual affairs for the fun of them, sharing her knowledge that she has gained from other such encounters. The relationships are intense and passionate, seldom lasting longer then the length of her encounter till she grows restless and longs to return to her endless quest. This is because she fears that if she does fall in love, she might possibly outlive the mate. Time Lords are too above romantic and sexual encounters, and other life forms she could share a relationship with are too short lived for a long haul.
Now that she is a gargoyle, Ray no longer has access to her dormant time manipulation, but it is still genetcially present. She can still sense time disturbances to a limited degree then before. Her lack of skill at gliding makes her more likely to crash into a building then land gracefully, so for the meantime her mobility is limited to climbing and jumping between buildings.
Since she distrusts technology, she isn't the best to rely upon to fix a computer. She does have the knowledge Fiona did regarding machines and high tech. Yet is hesitant to tap into this knowledge to use it.
Due to the fact she keeps others at arms length, she is prone to suffer bouts of depression from loneliness. This fact she ignores. Also her tendency to assist others in need sometimes leads her into difficult moral dilemmas and interpersonal conflict. The need to prove herself worthy of others friendships is her constant flaw.
Mantissa in Ray's reality was invaded by the Time Lords because they were practicing unauthorized time travel. She was the assistant to the time lord known as the Rani, who were both studying her people. In an unprecedented move, Rassilon ordered the conquest of Mantissa. This period in Gallifrey's history was officially kept off the record. Eventually Mantissa was forgotten, yet still held under Time Lord domination. Mantissans were conscripted to work as servants on Gallifrey, and lab assistants for the Time Lords on other worlds.
Yet their grip on Mantissa began to relax come the time of the Doctor. They were beginning to develop time travel once more. Several scientists were close to breaking the time barrier with knowledge stolen from their masters. One scientist experimenting in this medium was Fiona Vitreum. The Rani, another time lord Rival of the Doctor, traveled to Mantissa and staged a revolt, along with her assistant, known as Raina. The Mantissans haled her as a hero.
Yet she had an agenda. Mantissan Rhanalda distrusted her. She convinced the other assistant time lord Rayna to send a report to Gallifrey. Together they figured out a way of stopping the Rani's genetic experiments that were going on within their planet. For Mantissa, being under Time Lord domination, was hidden from the rest of the Universe in a pocket dimension. It made a convenient base of operations. Yet when Rayna contacted the Gallifreyan high council, and reported the Rani's actions, the Lord President put a stop to Time Lord domination there. Taking Fiona with her, the Rani fled to another planet, Tetrabyria to continue her experiments.
Fiona continued to serve the Ranee, brainwashed into thinking Time Lords were her enemy. However, she had a feeling that the experiments were not what an intelligent scientist should be performing on sentient life forms. The basic philosophy of Mantissan life was to respect other life forms. And this side of the Ranee was not presented to the Mantissans. Except those that served the Rani. Meanwhile on earth, Rayna posed as a human being and attempted to track down the Doctor for his help in finding the Rani's whereabouts as she often traveled far from Tetrabyria, leaving it in the care of Fiona and Urak, her chief Tetrap.
When she abducted human telepaths, Fiona was already close to a crisis. How could she condone this, for her own race was telepathic in nature! She sensed the intelligence of several human telepaths, and then bonded with one of them, Callom. His telepathic abilities seemed advanced among the others. Also present was the time lord Rayna Vitreum, who masqueraded as a human geologist to undermine the Rani's spells. She had gone so far as to make herself forget her abilities, only to be awkened by a code word from the Doctor, who kept their plot secret from everyone except the President of Gallifrey, Romanadvoratnatrelunder.
Eventually she helped them to escape. The story of the result of this is told in Castaway in Time and Space. And the story of her subsequent Regeneration is told in A Growing Madness. Essentially she betrayed the Rani and ended up paying the price with her life.
The Doctor sense that Fiona had a role to play in history. For he sensed her mind, and true form. Intrigued, he felt at all costs she must survived. He took the memories of this being and infused them into the mind of the time lord undercover agent Raina, who was pushed into regernation. As a result, Rayna emerged healed with the memories of Fiona Vitreum submerged temporarily. She recalled her friendships with Callom and Ace... but most of the scientific knowledge she had as a time experimenter was pushed aside by a sudden love of geology and anthropology.
Rayna Vitreum is the exact opposite of the cyborg Trynia Merin, whose reality she created by her help with the Time Lords efforts to stop the Rani. She feels most at home in natural settings, with few people, and this is a direct attempt to find an identity much different from her former incarnation. Time Lords are able to regenerate their bodies whenever close to death. The period between regenerations renders them vulnerable, searching for a new identity. This happened to Rayna, and geology was the identity she adopted. However his attempts to get her to remember her gallifreyan self were faulty at first. She was ready to believe him, yet sensed there was more to the Doctor's story then he claimed. Over time, she regained her identity as a Time Lord under the doctor's care. For a time she journeyed with the Doctor, and his companion Ace. Instantly she felt protective to Callom, acting as a close friend and at times a mother figure. With this she recalled the temporal tampering of Mantissan history by the Time Lords, and felt guilty though she was doing her duty.
Callom and Rayna's bond was reinforced when one of the Doctor's time experiments to fix the TARDIs failed. And caused everyone to age backwards. Trynia and he were not affected. But Callom and Ace retro aged. Rayna to save Callom, placed the embryonic Callom into her body's reproductive system. She was able to tap into her time manipulation power to regress the disaster. Callom was "born" from Rayna. The rapid progression caused him and Ace to return to their right ages.
As a result, Callom thought of Rayna as a surrogate mother. This bond was no longer just spiritual. Yet he would have dreams of another set of parents. He was afraid to tell her, for he feared she would be jealous. It was always Rayna's goal to return Callom to his own time and place. For it was Fiona who abducted him for the Ranee's experiments.
Eventually Rayna parted ways with the Doctor to resume her own life. She was assigned to Earth in the Middle Ages to study a new temporal anomaly called the Phoenix Gate and study its impact on Earth history. When undercover she encountered the beign MacBeth in the fourteenth century, and began a series of relationships with the immortal in the attempts to track down the Phoenix gate, as legend had that Demona had last wielded it, and posessed half of it. She went on successive journeys, but she felt empty at the fact she had aided in the manipulation of Mantissa's genetics unwittingly under her time with the Rani. MacBeth and she had a long and tempestuous relationship throughout five hundred years, spending many lifetimes together, or apart as MAcBeth's desire to hunt Demona would resurface time and again. When she sought to keep MacBeth from trackign Demona, he eventually figured out her attempts were hindering him, and they parted ways in the early twentieth century. In WWII they reconciled as friends and promised to be there for one another should any problems arise. Only MacBeth knows Ray is a Time Lord.
Recent developments:
Rayna travels through Space and Time alone, following in the Doctor's footsteps as an unwilling if occaisional agent of the Time Lords. She often has encountered the Time Lord in the midst of his travels. She is likely to be encountered on Earth in the twenty first century, or earth of the twenty fourth. Her most recent travels have lead her to adopt a life on Earth of the twentieth century in an effort to give Callom a more stable lifestyle. Rayna acts as a geologist working for the US Geological survey. Her travels take her to San Francisco, and New York City. Recently she works as a consultant for Xanatos Enterprises in New York, and is currently living betwixt the two cities giving lectures to the public on responsible living with geological disasters.
She encounters strange phenomenon associated with alien visitations, and odd temporal distortions in both cities. Rayna is currently investigating sightings of odd events, thinking they are possibly caused by electromagnetic distortions in the Earth's field which occur before earth quakes. The mission that the Time Lords have sent her on this time is to reunite Callom with his biological parents, and to investigate the rash of temporal unravelling centered about New York and San Francisco.
Both of these investigations will forever change Rayna's flight from her past.
the Manhattan Clan:
Goliath: Distrustful of Rayna at first, he reluctantly sees that she means well when she helps to retrieve the Phoenix gate from Demona. Her devotion to right is something he recongizes, but he does wish that she wouldn't try so hard to earn the Manhattan Clan's trust. He disagrees with her coming to work for Xanatos, not comprehending why she would give up teaching at a University for this reason.
Elisa: Admires Rayna because of her devotion to doing right, and her concern for
others. She is still trying to learn more about this elusive and secretive time lady.
After all, Rayna did help the Clan. Just why she did and what her motivations are
for associating with Xanatos, Elisa is determined to find out. The two are
acquaintances, and both share something in common. They are humanoids who
both are interested in helping the Manhattan clan to survive, and both share
romantic ties to the gargoyles they love.
Hudson: Is romantically attracted to the Time Lady, for she herself is alone without clan or family, and she enjoys the outdoors and simpler pleasures of existance. This started as a fascination and urge to protect her, for she seems lost and lonely, struggling constantly to prove herself to others and do good deads. He confronts her as to why she tries so hard to help others, yet will not let people get close. It's Hudson's current goal to get Rayna to open up and share herself with others, for he sees the potential for her goodness and overcoming her emotional stagnation. However, he is a bit hesitant about how far the relationship will go, proven that this is the first time he's had romantic feelings for anyone since his mate died.
Brooklyn: Resentful and jealous of Hudson's infatuation with Rayna, he is a bit tetchy and bombastic when he sees them spending time together.
Broadway: Pretty much sees her as a trusted friend and ally of the clan.
Lexington: Rayna and Lex hit it off very well from the start, because both are scientifically minded. Lex is intrigued by Rayna's claims to have visited many alien worlds. Both talk about the possibilities of space travel and space engineering, as well as other fascinating technologies she has seen.
Angela: Not quite sure of what to make of Rayna, but since Rayna proved herself loyal to the Manhattan clan, she is warming up to the geologist.
Delilah: Rayna is kind and gentle to the Clone, and for this Delilah trusts her. Rayna is one of the few who seeks to help Delilah understand science, and belives that Delilah has the capacity to be just as smart as the other gargoyles given enough time and education.
Marianne Ellis: Knows Rayna in her persona of geology professor. The two know each other by reputation, despite their respective different fields of chemistry. When she meets Rayna she is taken aback by Rayna's casual approach to research.
Chas Cassidy: Unfortunately, Chas once tried to woo Rayna away from Macbeth during the eighteenth century, mainly out of spite, and the fact he finds a bit of a kindred spirit in the down-to-earth, geologist time lady. This erupted in an argument between the two, as Rayna sided with Macbeth in the centuries old feud between the two immortals. In present day, Rayna has a bit of a crush on Chas, but would not in her wildest dreams consider breaking him and Marianne apart. She pledges to protect Chas and Marianne's family. However the two have since had no issues as Chas and Marianne have continued their relationship and returned to England to search for Arthur Pendragon.
Demona's Clan
Demona: Fascinated and flummuxed by the Time Lady, for Rayna is one of the first to openly admit to knowing about Demona's past and attempting to sympathize with her. Demona's plot to destroy Xanatos was hampered by Rayna. Because she is not human, Demona has a greater tolerance and a grudging respect for Rayna. The results of this will lead to some disturbing developments that will change the Time Lady's existence forever.
Thailog: The first to recognize that Rayna was not a run of the mill human, but something vastly different. Thailog's cunning and intelligence deduce that Rayna's staying one step ahead of Demona and the Gate is unusual, and seeks to use this to his advantage. His plot to utilize Rayna will forever change the Geologist's life.
Macbeth: The two have a history together, for a few times in Macbeth's immortal life, the two encountered each other. For a time they even shared a romantic attraction, during the Age of Reason, and Jacobite Rebellion in 1745 Scotland, but due to Rayna's fear of hurting another emotionally, and the convenient excuse of being whisked away time and again by the Time Lords, they ended their love affair. Still Macbeth is a trusted ally, one of the few who truely knows Rayna's Time Lord identity. He harbors love for her still, and would go to any lengths to protect and defend her, for she in her own way loves him still.
Xanatos: Hires Rayna at first to help him find new sources of mineral ores for Xanatos Enterprises. He doesn't know she is an alien whose purpose is to retrieve the Phoenix Gate and keep it from being used by those who would abuse it. Instead he sees the geologist, Rayna's cover, and seeks to utilize her expertise in minerology to bolster his bankrupted corporation. He tolerates her curious nature, for she has negociated deals with other corporations to set Xanatos onto space mining of local asteroids.
Fox: Distrustful of Rayna, and a bit annoyed that Rayna rushes into things that are not her affair. This distrust will prove a problem for the geologist in upcoming fanfics.
