Menlough 1-13 Headford 1-4

The first competitive action of the new season took place on Saturday evening last in Menlough as the minor team took on Headford. Despite the cold weather the conditions were ideal and following an interesting encounter the Menlough team came out on top on a final score line of 1-13 to 1-4.

The lads started much brighter than their counterparts and produced a flurry of scores, which was unanswered by Headford in the first half. Robert Hughes gave us an early lead from two frees which, was followed by a point from play close in off his left boot. Shortly after Hughes was involved again as he took up his midfield role and broke down the ball to the on running John Haverty, he carried the ball before unleasing an unstoppable shot past the Headford goalie and to the back of the net. Declan Walsh carried on the scoring form as he pointed from 30 yards out. The backs led by Mark Costello in the center blocked out the Headford threat very capably in the first half and continually frustrated their opponents with close marking and spells of good passing to their forward teammates. Costello was involved in the breakdown of one of those attacks, picking the ball up on his own 45 he started and finished a move, which resulted in a fine point for him. Hughes again stepped up to knock over another free and followed this with a point from play. Headford looked to play down along Menlough痴 left wing throughout most of the first half, their efforts were hampered by the strong play of Declan Lydon and Michael Fahy. Fahy showed some great strength on the ball and off it as he showed no mercy in dealing out the shoulders in this game. Good work from Dean Laheen on the left as he defended from the front line resulted in another Hughes pointed free. John Haverty then struck another point following a good passing move. The final action of the first half saw a speedy David Reilly outrun the Headford defence and drive a shot low towards goal that was saved well by the Headford goalie. At half time the home team lead 1-9 to no score.

The second half failed to produce the free flowing scores of the first as Headford opened their account with a free and Hughes cancelled it out with a pointed free. Headford then goaled as the Menlough defence failed to clear the ball form a free kick. Corner back Barry Laheen who defended well throughout decided to get in on the scoring act. He found himself in the forward line to capitalise on a loose pass and point off his left. Hughes and John Keeley enjoyed a lot of possession in the middle of the pitch as they won the midfield battle. Late in the second half Hughes caught a ball from midfield and continued on a probing run up the pitch before striking hard towards goal and notching himself him another point. Headford responded well with two points before the scoring was finished off by John Haverty who pointed following a great passage of passing which swept from defence to attack.
