If you are
visiting Oaxaca, come visit our showroom on Garcia Vigil. You will
find a wide array of designs and colors woven with the finest details
and workmanship. If you visit Teotitlan del Valley, you will find
our family of weavers ready to welcome you and explain the many steps
required to create these works of tradition and art.
Mendoza Tapetes also offers custom designed rugs. We can create
rugs with your family crest, corporate logo, sports team logo, or
whatever you desire. Many clients bring in photos or samples
of cloth and designs for us to match.
There are many rug
weavers in the Valley of Oaxaca but none more creative than Mendoza Tapetes.

Our rugs, like our family, have their
roots in
Teotitlan de Valley, recognized as the tapete
center of Mexico.
|
The first step is washing, carding and
spinning
the wool.
|
|
|
The next step is dying the wool. We
use only
natural dyes which are made from plants
and vegetables. The colors are more
fade resistant.
|
Cochinella, an insect found on the cactus
plant provides the deep red color greatly
favored by the Aztecs and the Spaniards.
|
|
|
Although each color is unique, we
try
to closely match colors for custom orders.
|
When the wool is ready, the real
work,
weaving, begins. The time required
varies depending on the size of the rug
and its detail but can vary from one
week to several months.

Each rug is unique. Perhaps the
most popular
design is based on the geometrical patterns
found on the temples at nearby Mitla,
holy city of the Zapotecs dating back
more than 2,000 years.

The Mitla designs are interpreted
in
varied striking, colorful creations.
