Neurogliocytes are the interstitial supporting tissue of nervous system. It also serves as a nutritive, protective and supportive tissue of the CNS.

The neuroglia may be grouped into 3 types

Astrocytes

Oligodendrocytes or oligodendroglia

Microglia

Ependyma

Astrocytes - has cytoplasmic processes.

Based on the length of these processes, they are divided into

i. Fibrous astrocytes- long rayed

ii. Protoplasmic astrocytes - short rayed

i. Fiberous astrocytes - found between the nerve fibers of the white matter of the C.N.S

ii. Protoplasmic astrocytes- forms a thick feltwork in the gray matter of brain and spinal cord.

2. Oligodendrocytes- cells are smaller than the astrocytes. It involves in the formation of myelin sheath.

3. Microglia- the microglia cells of Hortega. These cells are highly motile and phagocytic.

4. Ependyma- Single layer of columnar cells and lines the ventricles of brain and central canal of spinal cord. In certain place, they have cilia on the surface.
