Oldoinyo Lengai (The Mountain of God)
This mountain is situated in the Rift Valley, 15km. south of Lake Natron. Oldoinyo Lengai
in Maasai language means "Mountain of God" is the youngest volcano in the region; it is also the only one that still produces spectacular
eruptions. There are two craters (north and south), only the northern one is active. The diameter of the Crater is 240m.
Oldoinyo Lengai has erupted nearly fifteen times over the past century. The most dramatic
eruption in 1917 caused all the vegetation to disappear. Another in 1941 lasted six months. In June 1993 black smoke rose up above the mountain
on several occasions.
