| Preparing to be a Bar or Bat Mitzvah begins as soon as a Jewish child is born. Many children begin their formal Jewish education in preschool, laying the foundation for the many hours of study and practice necessary for taking on the obligation of observing the Mitzvot, or commandments in the Torah. |
Jewish children are encouraged to observe the Laws of the Torah as soon as they are able. Scholars believe girls are able to begin taking on this responsibility at age 12, and boys at age 13. When they reach this age, they become sons and daughters of the Commandments, or Bar and Bat Mitzvah. |
