Cate Blanchett, raised by her mother since her father's passing when she was ten, describes her childhood as normal. She attended a Methodist's Ladies College. At Melbourne, she studied economics and fine arts, but then left England once her visa expired. She traveled to England, where she signed up to be an extra for a an Arabic boxing film, being desparate for money. When she returned to Melbourne, she enrolled in the National Institue of Dramatic Art in Australia. After graduating, she joined the Sydney's Theatre Company, where she starred as Felice Bauer in a production called production Top Girl's. For that she won the Newcomer Award from the Sydney Theatre Critics Circle and not long after, she won the Rosemont Best Actress Award. She was nominated "Best Female Performance" for her part in Hamlet in 1995.
Cate went on to star in many more plays and movies, winning critical acclaim and many more awards. In 1997, she married Andrew Upton, a script and continuity editor she met at a Parklandsshoot. She continued to do many more movies, and she won the Best Actress Academy Award in February 1999.
Among Cate's many achievements is her being the first to have won Best Newcomer and Lead Actress in the same year. She has also gained more fame from her part as Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (directed by Peter Jackson). She admits that the reason why she accepted the role was because she had always wanted to have pointed ears. (After the film, she kept and bronzed her prosthetic ears.)
On The Lord of the Rings, Cate said -
"I had never done anything with blue screen before, or prosthetics, or anything like that. "Lord of the Rings" was like stepping into a videogame for me. It was another world completely. But, to be honest, I basically did it so that I could have the ears. I thought they would really work with my bare head."
Cate has recently won the Helpmann Award for Best Female Actor in a Play for her performance in Hedda Gabler.
