Miranda Otto was born to Barry and Lindsay Otto in December of 1967, and was named after the character Miranda in William Shakespeare's The Tempest. Her father, Barry Otto, was a famed actor. Miranda gave up a medical career to pursue acting, and she became a graduate of the famous NIDA theatrical school and has been nominated four times in the Australian Film Institute's for best actress. In 2003, she won the Australian Entertainment "Mo" Award for Best Actress in a Play for A Doll's House.
In 1986, Miranda starred in Emma's War, and in 1991, The Girl Who Came Late.
She also starred in major motion pictures such as The Thin Red Line in 1998 and Robert Zemeckis' What Lies Beneath (2000). Miranda landed the role of Eowyn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. She spent six months learning to ride horses and use swords.
On Eowyn, Miranda says -
"She's sort of grown up in a world of men; she's been brought up to fight, she's been brought up to ride. She's surrounded by men. . .and yet she's not allowed to be a man."
"At some level it stops and she gets left at home, because she is the only daughter and because she is a woman and they want to protect her..but she doesn't want to be protected."
Starring as Eowyn has resulted in world-wide fame for Miranda, quite different from the times she had spent working on critically acclaimed but little-seen movies. After filming Lord of the Rings, she went on to star in Julie Walking Home (2002),a melancholy tale of a mother's desperate and unyielding last attempts to save her cancer-diagnosed son when mainstream medicine fails him, and in 2003, she received a Helpmann Award Nomination for "Best Female Actor in a Play" for "A Doll's House". She has also been in the comedy Danny Deckchair. Also in 2003, she married Peter O'Brien II. She was pregnant while filming War of the Worlds, and in Australia, she gave birth to her first child, a girl, named Darcey.
Recently, Miranda won Logie for Most Outstanding Actress In A Drama Series for the miniseries Through My Eyes (May 2005).
