Éowyn was the daughter of Théodwyn, King Théodens sister, and Éomund, chief marshal of the mark. Orphaned at age seven after the deaths of Éomund, and then Théoden, in 3002, she and Éomer were brought to Meduseld, where Théoden attempted to raise them as his own children. Éowyn grew up to be tall and beautiful, with golden blonde hair and grey eyes, and experience in riding horses and wielding swords. Being strong and fearless, with pride and grace inherited from her grandmother, Morwen of Lassarnach, she was loved by the people of Rohan.
In TA 394, Théoden became ill, aging prematurely and losing capability of clear judgment. Grima, his councilor, and the secret agent of Saruman, preyed on Théodens weakness, deeply debilitating him. Éowyn, who was put in charge of caring for her sick uncle, was Grimas promised reward from Saruman.
In TA 3019, when Aragorn arrived at Rohan, Éowyn believed herself to be in love with him, for he had all the things she desired strength, vitality, and power. When Aragorn refused to let her accompany him to the Paths of the Dead, she became desperate, desiring only a glorious death in battle. Disguised as a Rider of the Mark named Dernhelm, she fought at the Battle of Pelennor Fields, where she stood by Théoden and slew the Witch-King with Merrys help.
Gravely ill from her broken shield-arm and from contact with the Lord of the Ringwraiths, she was taken to the Houses of Healing, where she was healed by Aragorn. There she stayed, even after the War, recovering. On meeting Faramir, the Steward of Gondor, Éowyn fell in love with him and declared that she no longer desired to be a queen, nor a shieldmaiden. They were married in 3020 and removed to Ithilien at Emyn Arnen, a range of hills within sight of Minas Tirith. There Éowyn nurtured Ithiliens gardens and restored it to its former beauty. She and Faramir spent many years there in happiness and peace. They had at least one son: Elboron. The date of Éowyns death is not recorded. After Faramirs death in FA 82, Elboron succeeded him as the Steward of Gondor and the second Prince of Ithilien. His son (Éowyns grandson), Barahir, wrote The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen.
