MY TEXTILE ARTWORK

The colour of lines

I grew up on the shores of the Black Sea (in Ordu/Turkey). Not only do the colours that I use reflect the colours of the Turkish sky, sea and land, it also reflects my mood and emotions. It is my journey between here and there.

The materials that I get in Turkey bring the culture and the colours with them. As I work with these wonderful materials I can almost hear the cows coming home as their bells chime, I hear the sound of cows being milked, I smell the smokes coming from the chimneys of the village houses, freshly baked corn bread and soups, and the fishing boats on the horizon…

The lines, sometimes the big waves of the sea sometimes driftwood that makes it’s way to the shore… sometimes the colour of the sand and the seaweed. Sometimes the smell of fresh hazelnuts and wild berries… Sometimes it is fresh breeze (meltem) that comes from the sea… sometimes calm before the storm, sometimes green like the trees, sometimes red like the sun! And sometimes the lines on your face…

Sometime we can get lost in thoughts by looking at the horizon where the sea meets the sky. Sometimes we upset one another, break each other’s heart unintentionally, and the fine line breaks. Sometimes we manage to tie the knot again and watch the colours grow and develop…

My work with yarns is a reflection and representation of these emotions and communications. Each line, texture, colour and their combinations reflects us as individuals. It is all about human-beings; our feelings, our communications with each other and our interactions with our surroundings; happy, sad, thoughtful, lost, high, managing, struggling, fighting, heart broken, in love, included, isolated, lonely, valued, loved…

The lines straight, the lines broken, the lines continual, the lines coloured, the lines textured, lines curved, the long and the short lines…. lines…lines…lines… all along the lines…
