What expectations do we have of a volunteer?

We are looking for individuals who are:

 

• excited about immersing themselves in the culture of Pamparomas and are open to learning from it.

• interested in working in any of these areas - agriculture, education, promotion of women's well-being , health care, tourism, or project design and co-ordination.

• dedicated to learning Spanish and some Quechua.

• motivated to be part of a team and to direct their own work projects.

• able to adapt to simple living conditions.

• strong in their Christian faith and sincerely interested in others.

• in good physical condition.

  COMMITMENT

  We are looking for individuals who are willing to commit to ONE or more years working with the D.G.P. Volunteers may start at any time of the year.

  WORDS OF A PARTICIPANT I love being in Peru. The people of Pamparomas have welcomed me so warmly into their lives, and have taught me so much from how to cook potatoes in about 30 different ways to how to drive on crazy, slippery roads, to more complex issues such as the meaning of solidarity, generosity, hospitality, and development work. And I totally agree with the way the D.G.P. does its development work, basing it out of local knowledge, insight and experience so I feel very lucky to be here. I also sometimes feel rather overwhelmed, because it seems that everything we do will have an impact on some friends' lives, hopefully for the better, and this imparts a huge sense of meaning to my work. My work has been incredibly varied: promoting the women's groups, organizing the reforestation for the district, planting clover to improve the pasturelands, and giving workshops on how to vote, among others. I love having the freedom to design my own projects, as well as being able to collaborate on others. And it's all topped off by the spontaneous, exuberant spirit to life in Peru that makes fantastic adventures follow one after another. Melanie Fricot March. 2001

  COSTS

  Participants must fundraise airfare to and from Peru as well as $400 Canadian per month. This can be a shared expense with your Parish and individuals who wish to share in your Mission.
