MEMORIES OF DIANA, PART TEN
"Stavros!" Carl was dripping wet, and had one hand pressed to his side.
"Carl! What happened?"
"The Harbour Police raided as we were loading the ship!" said Carl, sinking onto a chair.
"Where's Demetrios?"
"Dead - or in custody. " said Carl, "I think I'm the only one who managed to escape. Take my advice: never try to swim underwater with a bullet in you!"
"I know a doctor who doesn't ask questions." said Stavros.
"I hope he makes housecalls." said Carl, "I don't think I can walk any further."

The doctor had assured Carl that his bullet wound was not serious, but it certainly hurt. He had not taken the painkillers the doctor had left, however, preferring to keep his mind clear.
Stavros brought in the morning papers.
"You made the front page!" he said, "The police are looking for Lazlo Carlson."
"What of it?" said Carl, "I"m an innocent English tourist named Julian Bellows. Hand me my moneybelt, will you?" The belt was waterproof, the contents intact. "Passport for Julian Bellows- tourist visa - both nicely stamped - and enough money for a plane ticket out of Greece." said Carl, "After which I shall be virtually penniless! "
Stavros turned on the tv news. The shootout on the docks was the top story.
"The police were tipped off - they Must have been!" said Carl. He didn't understand the commentary, which was in Greek, but the images spoke for themselves. "Nikos!"
Alexander Nikos was obviously NOT under arrest. The police were giving him sympathetic looks as he sobbed into a handkerchief.
"That's right - cry!" growled Carl, "You took my money and then betrayed me, You Judas!"
The camera showed a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance. The figure on it was covered in a blanket, but long golden hair spilled from the edge.
"My God!" said Carl, "Stavros -who is That?"
As if in answer, the news reader distinctly said "Diana Nikos."
"Diana? Diana's dead?" Carl couldn't believe it. "How can she be dead? What was she doing on the ship?"
With a sickening shock, Carl realised that Diana must have gone to the ship, to Tell Nikos to his face that she was leaving him. It wasn't in her nature to sneak away in the night; she was too straightforward for that. She must have gotten caught in the crossfire.
Diana was dead! The pain of his bullet wound was nothing, compared to that! Carl had loved only two women in his life, and Death had taken both of them away from him. From now on, Carl was through with love!
