Breezy, or "Breezy Louisie" as I affectionately called her, was a beautiful, SMART, and incredibly sweet black labrador who I had the pleasure of having in my life for about eight months. She was a trained guide dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind in California. I got the idea one day to apply for a guide dog, thinking having one just might help me out in ways that I had not thought of. I absolutely love dogs, and the main qualification was to be "legally blind, " which by all legal definitions, I am. Well, the training up in California was great, and I really thought that she would be of benefit to me. So, after the training, she came home with me, and went almost everywhere with me for the first couple of months, and it was great. But gradually, I began to leave her at home/in my dorm room more and more when I went places. And I also started realizing that she was becoming more and more of a companion than a helper. That was all fine and dandy with me, she was the most awesome dog I've ever had! However, she was not raised and trained to be a companion dog. She was trained to help the visually impaired who may have less vision than me, and might otherwise not get out and be as independent as I have been blessed to be with no aids. So through much praying and MANY tears, I made the reluctant decision to give her back to the Guide Dog school. That was back in January 2003, and to this day I still think about her a lot, and wonder who she's with now, and think how lucky that person is. I do miss her dearly, but I feel good about the decision that I made, and the whole experience was well worth it. I hope to someday have a pet dog that is even half as awesome as Breezy! |
