| I have had many guinea pigs and have loved everyone of them. My family all grew up with guineas too. My nanny used to have a few in her youth and bred them.My mother also had them and she too is interested in them. When I was Roughly 7 , I had a long-hair(peruvian)cavy, named Frisky. He was great and lived to a ripe old age of 8.In the summer, I would give his fur a trim as he would get very hot and would trip over his fur continually. Soon after, we had a guinea pig which became good friends with Frisky , although they were not related. He was never named , although he was loved very much. Recently, we greatfully recieved 2 female guinea pigs from a kind woman called Pat, who owns a pet shop in Clevedon town. Scamps, a brown Abyssinian, gave birth to two beautiful babies. During the pregnancy, she would not stop eating! The best thing for sows is carrot and milk as it helps with baby development and milk. When she came to be about50 days pregnant, we could feel feet and heads around the abdominal area.We could see them moving and the nhearts beat. If we had touched the babies before they were 1 week old , or put our hands in the cage, no doubt Scamps would have attacked them.Lucky for us she didnt! They all live happily in a large indoor cage which we keep in our living room. At about 4 weeks of age, the bapies should reject the sow and see her as a stranger. So far, they are coming up for 8 week and this has still not happened!!I put it down to Scamps being so sweet. We also have one silver shaggy sheltie which looks more like a squirrel than a cavy! Her fur is quite short and gets longer around her bottom. She enjoys eating carrots, hay, grass, cucumber , basically all fruit and veg apart fom some posinous ones such as lettuce which may kill a cavy. Up until recently, she got on fine with Scamps but since the babies arrived, they have been fighting. This is because Scamps is protecting her babies from any danger. On the whole, guinea pigs ,make wonderful pets, and if you intend on buying one, there are some things to look out for: *CLEAN ANUS *GOOD APPETITE *SILENT AND REGULAR BREATHING *CLEAN COAT *ALERT *BRIGHT EYES *CLEAN MOUTH *RAPID MOVEMENT *CLEAR NOSE Cavys need goof regular excercise in order to stay healthy. A grazing ark on a patch of grass is ideal. If there is no grass available, Concret is fine. The grass should be clean and free from pesticides and poisons. Also if you have a dog make sure the dog has not soiled on it. Guinea pigs make wonderful pets and make sure you give it lots of attention or it may feel neglected |
