Dear Students, Parents, and Fellow Visitors from Central High School:

Welcome to my site!  I'm sure you'll find the many features included in this site useful in interacting online and keeping up-to-speed with what's happening in my classroom.

Parents--you'll like the "Parent Resources" page, giving you information about how to help your child succeed, as well as links to my classroom rules and policies.  There's even a link to the classroom syllabus--a schedule of activities and homework assignments--for reference when your son or daughter is ill and misses school.  If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me at the school.

Students--you'll find links to your class--either 9th grade English or 9th grade advanced English--and there you'll find links to my classroom rules and policies, including my requirements for the appearance of students work, deadlines and late policies, and homework and grading policies.  You'll also like the online schedule of homework assignments--for those of you who like to read ahead--and the introduction and explanation of student and group projects that we'll be working on.  I'm really looking forward to having all of you in my classes this semester.

Enjoy this site--I hope it will be a useful resource for all of you!

~Mrs. Feller

Course Objectives

1. Students apply knowledge of word origins to determine the meaning of new words encountered in reading and use those words accurately.

2. Students read and understand grade-level-appropriate materials.  They analyze the organizational patterns and evaluate the author’s arguments and positions.

3. Students discuss ideas for writing with other writers.  They write coherent and focused essays that show a well-defined point-of-view and tightly-reasoned argument.  Students progress through the stages of the writing process (prewriting, writing, editing, and revising).

4. Students read and respond to grade-level-appropriate historically or culturally significant works of literature that reflect and enhance their study of history and social science.

5. Students combine the rhetorical strategies of narration, exposition, persuasion, and descriptions to produce texts.  Students’ writing demonstrates an awareness of the audience and purpose for writing.

6. Students write using Standard English conventions.

7. Students formulate thoughtful judgments about oral communication.  They deliver focused and coherent presentations of their own that convey clear and distinct perspectives and solid reasoning.  Students deliver polished formal and extemporaneous presentations that combine the traditional speech strategies of narration, expositions, persuasion, and description.  They use gestures, tone, and vocabulary appropriate to the audience and purpose.  Students use the same Standard English conventions for oral speech that they use in their writing.
