The Goodstay House dates from about 1740; the gardens that evolved are among the oldest in Delaware. In 1923, the house and grounds became the property of Ellen du Pont Wheelwright, who with her landscape architect, Robert, turned the Tudor-style kitchen garden into a horticultural gem. Later they added an avenue of 30 pink-blossoming magnolia trees leading to a circular reflecting pool. Upon her death in 1968, Mrs. Wheelwright left the property to a local university. |
