DOWN RIVER - DUSK
A
helicopter is swinging down river, as the evening sky darkens. Gerard and
Agent Holmes scan the river below, one in anticipation, the other with foreboding,
as a large waterfall comes into view. Suddenly Gerard points below.
“Land
in that open area by the waterfall!” he shouts to the pilot. As the copter
lands, Gerard jumps out and runs into the water to retrieve a battered duffel
bag. He shoves the duffel bag into Kari's hands as he continues to scan the
river and the banks, searching. Kari, her face pale, stares wordlessly at the
duffel bag.
“Damn!
If that helicopter had not needed refueled, we could have had him. I want a
search party out here. He got this far, but he’s NOT going to get away!”
“Get
away?!” Kari screams. “You won’t quit until you retrieve his dead body, will
you?”
“I
will not quit until I find a body, dead or alive!” Gerard shouts back in
frustration.
“Well,
maybe now you won’t have to worry about him getting off on an appeal, will
you?” she says angrily.
“It
was his decision to run and his decision to jump, Agent Holmes!”
Kari
looks at him in disbelief and disgust. Clutching the duffel bag, she turns and
walks back to the helicopter, her eyes swollen with tears.
