EPILOGUE:

PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE – TWO WEEKS LATER

Tim cautiously opens the door to the principal’s office. Hollis looks up from his desk. “Tim! Come on in.”

Tim shuts the door and stands awkwardly in the center of the room. “You wanted to see me, sir?”

“I haven’t seen you in here for a few weeks. I hear from your teachers that your school work has showed some marked improvement lately. I just wanted to congratulate you.”

With a tentative smile, Tim replies, “Thanks.”

“You know,” Hollis continues, “you could make Honor Roll this period.” Pausing, he adds casually, “If you keep that up for the rest of the year, I’ll see what I can do to get you on the Little League team next season. You know, if you’re good enough, you might be able to get a baseball scholarship someday.”

“Really?” Tim asks with a grin.

“Really.”

“Wow! Thanks, Mr. Hollis!” he shouts with excitement. More soberly, he adds “And thanks for…keeping your promise…to help….you know.”

“Tim…You know what I did was breaking the law…sometimes you….”

“Yeah, I know,” Tim says, looking thoughtful. “You did it for me, didn’t you?” he asks, looking up.

Hollis looks thoughtful. “Maybe I did it for both of you. Get back to class now,” he adds with a smile.

FUGITIVE TASK FORCE HEADQUARTERS

The task force is gathered in the office, Gerard at the head of the table.

“So, that’s it? No one’s seen Kimble since he left the library in Wellsville?”

“That’s right, captain,” says Eddie. “He just disappeared.”

“Wellsville!” exclaimed Eve. “Now I remember why that sounds so familiar! That’s where Melvin Purvis tracked down and killed ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd!”

Gerard and Eddie stare at her blankly.

Eve looks disconcerted, then explains, “In the 30’s, when the gangsters were out of control, Hoover started the FBI’s ’10 Most Wanted’ list. John Dillenger was #1. ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd was #2. Agent Purvis hunted them both down. Floyd was killed in Wellsville, trying to escape.”

Kari interjects, “If  I remember correctly, Floyd was accused of killing four police officers in Kansas City, something he denied with his dying breath.”

Gerard gives them both a steely look. “Thanks for the history lesson. It’s too bad Agent Purvis isn’t still around to help us catch Kimble. Is there anything  you two can add that will help us do that?”

Eve answers with an embarrassed “No, sir.”

“If you come up with anything else, let me know,” Gerard says, turning abruptly and leaving the room.

As task force members file out of the room, Kari notices a strange man enter the office and look around tentatively, obviously searching for something. She walks over to him and is surprised to see he seems to recognize her. “Can I help you?”

“I hope so, Agent Holmes. My name is Henry Armensco.”

***********************************************************************

In 1974, the late Roy Huggins, creator of “The Fugitive,”  produced a made-for-television movie on “The Life of Pretty Boy Floyd”. The true story of his life as a fugitive is as suspenseful as any episode of the TV series.
