AT KIMBLE'S APARTMENT - NEXT DAY - LATE AFTERNOON

Kimble hears voices in the hallway and recognizes Kim's. He looks outside to see Kim and helping her mother inside their apartment.

"Is everything OK?"

Kim smiles at him. "Mom's fine now. Would you like to come in?"

Kimble hesitates as Mrs. Yuen looks out the door. "Who this?" she ask Kim suspiciously.

"This is Mr. Peterson."

"Ah, so. You come in for tea?"

Kimble nods and follows the two into the apartment. Mrs. Yuen urges him to sit down and busily sets the table and brews the tea as Kim explains that her mother has been put on a diabetic diet.

Her mother breaks in the conversation. "Doctor gave me glucose kit for blood test. "

Kimble nods his understanding.

"I can help her calibrate it," Kim says. "But she still plans to go for her acupuncture treatments, don't you Mom?" Kim remarks, feeling a bit ashamed of her mother's traditional ways.

"Acupunture is a very ancient science," Kimble interjects diplomatically, "but many modern doctors recommend it nowadays."

Mrs. Yuen looks pleased by Kimble's support and good sense. She offers him a plate of almond cookies.

Kim notices Kimble looking at the pendant she is wearing around her neck. Shyly she shows it to him. "It's an I Ching coin. I asked my Mom for something to remember my Dad by, and she gave me this. My father always kept three of them in his wallet." Kim looks earnestly at Kimble. "I want him to be proud of me, Mr. Peterson."

Kimble glances over Kim's head and sees Kati's look of parental pride and approval. “He would be.” He hesitates. “I’ll be leaving town. I just wanted to say good-bye and make sure your mother was OK. You take care of her.”

I will. We're family." She fingers her pendant as she walks him to the door. "Good luck to you!”

“Thanks.” Kimble smiles and walks down the stairs and out onto the street. When he reaches a pay phone, he slips inside. He looks cautiously around as he dials a number.

"Bowers"

"Jim. It's me."

"Richard! I'm so glad you called. I followed up your lead on the witness. The girl's parents aren't being too cooperative," he adds.

"What do you mean?"

"Don't worry about, it, Richard. I'll deal with it and Agent Holmes has her in protective custody as well. Meanwhile, Becca has uncovered something at Ross Industries - they acquired Crystal Clear Water shortly after Helen’s death. She’s trying to find evidence of a connection to Charnquist in the computer files, but their security is pretty tight."

"Don't worry about that. I'll handle it from this end."

"Things are moving, Richard. We're going to get that appeal, Richard!"

"Thanks, Jim. For everything. I better go. I'll be in touch."

"OK."

Kimble hangs up the phone, then dials another number and waits anxiously for the voice on the other end.

"Chuck. I need a favor."

CHICAGO, RESIDENCE INN, KARI HOLMES APARTMENT

Kari answers a knock on her door. She looks startled at the sight of a man in his late fifties standing in the hallway. “Deputy Director Madison?”

He looks up and down the hallway. “May I come in?”

“Of course,” she answers, stepping aside to let him enter, then quickly shutting the door. “This is quite a surprise.  What brings you to Chicago? Does AD Merriman know you’re here?”

“Yes he does.  He offered to bring this information to you but I felt under the circumstances you need to hear this from me. It was my decision to approve your assignment to the Task Force in the first place.”

“Why?”

“Holmes, this is complicated. Are you aware of St. Felix at dr-richard-kimble.com?”

“The web site? Of course. He claims to be an FBI agent who knows the true story…You? You’re St. Felix?”

“I told you it was complicated.”

“I don’t understand any of this, why don’t you start from the beginning.”

“Agent Holmes, Charnquist used to work special ops for the CIA.  One of his assignments was to infiltrate organized crime on an international level and break up terrorist funding organizations.  In spite of what some people believe, terrorism didn’t start with 9/11, it’s been going on for a long time.  Charnquist turned into a loose cannon once he lost his arm.  He sold himself out to the highest bidder and then he managed to pull the wool over all of our eyes and fake his death.  That’s why his immunity code was never revoked.   When his picture popped up on the dr-richard-kimble.com website, we were shocked.  I no longer worked at the Agency, so I was unable to get his file.  However, since 9/11, the CIA and the FBI are sharing information.” He pulls a large folder out of his briefcase. “Here’s his entire file. It has everything you ever wanted to know about him and what he did for the CIA.”

He starts to get up when Kari says, “Not so fast!  I have a couple of questions.  Why was Agent Gagamiros here in Chicago and why did he try to kill Gerard?  And why was he working for Matthew Ross?”

“Gagamiros infiltrated Ross Industries as an employee in the early nineties.  We had suspected that Ross was involved in organized crime and had hoped he would lead us to the big fish.  We believe Gagamiros may have been co-opted by someone within Ross Industries and been playing a double game. Someone else apparently ordered him to handle the ‘situation’, at any cost.

“Why was someone like Charnquist even allowed in the CIA?”

“Read the file, Agent Holmes.  Everything is there.” He rises to leave. “I want you to know that since his role in Gagamiros’ death has been confirmed, Charnquist has been completely disavowed. His immunity code has been revoked. Frankly, if Charnquist is killed before he’s prosecuted, it will save the Agency a lot of embarressment.”

“We need him alive to clear Kimble!”

“Find the front man, Agent Holmes, and you won’t need Charnquist.”  He slips out the door without looking back.
