Melissa M. Tingley, M.Ed.
Candidate for the Rockport School Committee
Dear Rockport Resident,

My name is Melissa Tingley, candidate for the Rockport School Committee. I come to this race with significant qualifications including a Masters in Education and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology. I have designed courses, curricula, and computer-based learning programs, and I have been a technology project liaison between the state Department of Education and 35 school districts across the state of Massachusetts. I come knowing what is needed for this position.
Strong Schools,
Strong Communities
For the past few years, Rockport's schools have been making steady strides forward. With new leadership and new programs we have the potential to make Rockport a top notch school system from kindergarten through grade 12.

Strong schools are an important part of a town's overall health. A strong community is one in which residents of all ages participate with pride. A strong community is one to which our children will want to return to raise their children. Strong schools are a necessary part of such a community and we as a town must work together to build upon that strength.

To continue the progress of the last few years, I believe we need to strengthen the volunteer program in our school system. We need a coordinated program so that parents and community members who want to participate can, teachers get the help they need, and professionalism and confidentiality are ensured.

Of course strong schools require academic excellence, but excellence means more than just high test scores. As important as it is to elevate MCAS scores in Rockport, we must not lose sight of the other learning experiences we want for our children.

Rather than force all MCAS related learning into the year in which the student is expected to take the test, we should be spreading MCAS preparation throughout an integrated curriculum that begins in the early grades and combines creativity and thinking skills with subject matter knowledge.

In the next few years, the "Leave No Child Behind" Act will only increase the pressure on our students by testing them every year from grades 3-8. We must not fall into the trap of teaching to the test, but plan for learning so that our children are prepared.

I hope that you will help me put some of these ideas into practice. The education of our children is a matter that concerns the entire community. I am a 10-year resident of Rockport with a substantial background in education and educational technology. Vote for Melissa Tingley on April 16 and please join me in strengthening our schools and our community.
