Chappie 51- White Flag
I know you think that I shouldn't still love you,
I'll tell you that.
But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it
where's the sense in that?

Emia sighed to herself as she pushed a flaxen tress out of the way and looked out the window.  Avia must be so cold, she thought to herself softly as she looked at the full moon outside.  I hope she hasn’t been hurt too badly.

The blonde looked at the window wistfully. Why hasn’t he written?  Does he even care?

And Sirius had not written, Emia had not heard from Sirius at all since summer started.  Of course, Emia was unaware of the fact that Sirius was currently still dating Lasombra.  Sirius hadn’t found the courage or incentive to break up with her upon hearing the news about Emia…he realized that he would not see Emia for the whole summer anyway, so he saw no point in ruining a perfectly good relationship with Lasombra until it was really necessary.

So Emia busied herself with finding some parchment and ink to write a letter to Sirius.  If he won’t write to me…I’ll write to him.  And if he doesn’t write back, then I’ve got a legitimate reason to be angry, Emia thought to herself. Dipping her quill into the inkbottle, she began her letter.
Sirius,
I was just writing to see how you were, and to see how your summer was going.  Mine’s been good, but you haven’t written me at all.  I don’t mean to bug you about it or anything, but I just miss the letters we used to write back and forth.  I really miss that…and I miss you.
Emia paused with her quill paused above the paper, deciding what to write.  There was something weighing heavily on her mind, but she did not think it would really be appropriate for a letter. Oh, why not? Emia asked herself, dipping the quill back into the ink.  Continuing, she wrote-
Sirius, you used to close your letters with “I Love You”…what happened to that?  I’m gone for like a year and all of sudden you don’t care anymore?  I don’t mean to be mean, and I want you to date other girls and not waste your teenage years pining over me when I’m away in France, but I’m back now…and all I want to know is how I fit into the picture.  Sirius, I love you…but if you don’t feel the same way, I guess I’ll just have to learn how to be friends with you again. Just friends. I think I’ve said all I need to, but please respond, Siri.
Love- Emia
That sounds desperate; she thought to herself as she rolled up the parchment and put a wax seal on the front.  She decided to send it anyway, and crossed the room to Helena and attached it to her leg.  “Thanks, Helena,” Emia said softly as she patted her owl affectionately, and then sent her on her flight to the Blacks’ home.

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
or return to where we were

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The sounds of water echoed in the Black home the next morning as Sirius took his shower.  James was off at Lily’s house, as they were going to do their Diagon Alley shopping that day, and a girl was waiting in Sirius’ bedroom.  That girl, of course, was Lasombra.  A pecking sound began at Sirius’ window, and Lasombra rolled her eyes in annoyance.  Glancing through the clear glass, she noticed a lovely bird impatiently waiting.  I wonder who would be writing to Sirius, she thought curiously.  Glancing towards the bathroom to assure herself that yes, Sirius was still showering, she opened the window and let the bird in.  The bird seemed more than well acquainted with Sirius’ owl, Demetrius, and they hooted together like old friends.  Interesting, Lasombra thought at the spectacle.  Lifting a carefully plucked eyebrow at the scene, she carefully lifted the wax seal, and unrolled the parchment.  Her eyes widened considerably as she took more and more of the letter in.  This…this…Emia thought she could go in and steal the man Lasombra had rightfully stolen in the first place?! Hah! Lasombra was not just called Senorita Tigre for her man-eating skills, oh no.  She had a terrible temper, a flaring rage that nobody in their right mind would want to provoke.  And provoke it Emia had. Listening to make sure that Sirius was still showering, she found Sirius’ quill, ink and parchment, and found a sample of his handwriting as well in one of his old Potions essays lying on the floor.  As quickly and carefully as she could, she impersonated Sirius’ lettering on a piece of scratch paper.  Satisfied that she could do it decently, she started on the parchment.
Emia-
I do not love you.  What makes you think I ever had?  I have a girlfriend now, and she and I are very happy together.  Honestly, I’m not even sure that I want to be friends with you right now.  You’re not worth my time.
-Sirius
Lasombra looked up with a sneer; quite satisfied with herself.  She spent a couple minutes trying to get Helena to come to her, as the bird was making quite a ruckus and doing everything within its power to get away from the crazed girl.  Finally catching Helena, she attached the letter, and sent the owl on her way.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Emia tossed and turned in bed that night, haunted by nightmares of revenge, of Sirius and Lasombra.  Emia woke up several times during the night, and when her sister came in from the forest the next morning, even Avia noticed something was wrong, and she had not slept in several days.  “Emia?” she asked softly.
Her twin stirred, and rubbed her eyes, which were still very puffy and red from crying.
“What’s wrong?” Avia asked, immediately at her side.
Emia sniffed and pointed at a piece of parchment lying on the floor.  Avia picked it up slowly, and saw that it had smudged ink from tears.  She read it quickly and tossed it to the side so she could hug her sister soothingly.  “Emia, it will be okay,” she murmured into her sister’s hair, gently rubbing circles on Emia’s back.
“It will all be okay,” Avia continued to murmur.  “I promise…it will all be okay.”
Avia convinced Emia to sleep through the morning and Avia herself gratefully fell into her own bed, very thankful for the chance to rest.
Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Sirius smiled to himself in the mirror as he applied some aftershave to his face.  Today was the day he was going to break up with Lasombra.  He would be heading back to school as a 7th year, and Lasombra would be heading to St. Mungo’s to work hands-on as a nurse-in-training.  She didn’t really think it would last, did she? Of course not, Sirius said to himself. We both knew this would come to an end.  I’m doing the right thing…and I’ll get to see Emia in a month! She’ll finally be back at Hogwarts, oh Gods, how I’ve missed her.  I hope she isn’t mad about my letters lately…they haven’t talked about us at all.  I’ve tried to be general, Lasombra checks everything.  She’s everywhere! Of course, Mum just adores the girl, so she’s always up in my room…looking through my stuff.  Merlin only knows what she’s found-

Sirius was jogged out of his thoughts by a pecking at his window.  He smiled as he recognized Emia’s owl, Helena, but was surprised to see that Helena seemed a lot more grave than usual.  Opening the window, he was shocked to find a scarlet envelope dropped onto his lap.  Oh no, it’s a Howler! Sirius panicked. Mum will hear it all the way downstairs! Would Emia really be that mad about me not attaching “I love you” to a few letters?! It’s slightly cruel, sure, but it doesn’t deserve a bloody Howler!

Wincing, Sirius cautiously broke the wax seal on the scarlet envelope.  A booming voice filled the entire room, and Sirius was shocked to find that it was not Emia’s voice, but Avia’s.

“HOW DARE YOU, YOU NARCISSISTIC PRICK? YOU THINK YOU CAN JUST BREAK MY SISTER’S HEART LIKE THAT?! DO YOU HEAR HER SOBBING IN THE BACKGROUND?” Sirius did hear the crying, and his heart clenched.  Sirius put his head in his hands as the voice continued. “YEAH, SIRIUS, THAT’S YOUR FAULT! OH, I HOPE THAT YOU AND LASOMBRA HAVE A WONDERFUL LIFE TOGETHER, BUT DON’T EXPECT EMIA OR ME TO SPEAK WITH YOU EVER AGAIN!!” The booming voice stopped, and Sirius fell back on his bed, his eyes unusually wet and his whole head spinning.

I know I left too much mess and
destruction to come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Warm hands caressed Lily’s back gently as she lay on her living room floor.  She smiled to herself as the hands gently kneaded the knots out of her neck and upper back, and sighed with contentment as the hands traveled all over her back with dexterity.   The hands traveled up and down her spine, finally coming to rest in the middle of her back and giving a gentle pat to signify that they were done.  Lily smiled and turned onto her back, and looked up into James’ handsome face, meeting his eyes.  “Thank you,” she said softly.

He returned her smile, and replied, “You’re quite welcome.”

The eye contact continued until it was broken by loud pecking sounds from the kitchen.  Two owls were attacking the window with their beaks, attempting to get in.

“It’s Demetrius!” James exclaimed.

“That’s Helena, too!  Why are they here?!” Lily asked, opening the sliding door in the living room to run out and bring the birds inside.

When the owls were inside the house, Lily fed them and gave them water, and took the mail that they brought.

Demetrius’ letter was for James, Helena’s for Lily.

James broke the seal and read the letter quickly.

James-

Man, Emia’s ready to kill me! Well, actually, AVIA is…but I don’t know what I did! Avia sent me a Howler and called me a narcissistic prick and said I broke Emia’s heart…then she wish me and Lasombra a happy life together, well, sarcastically.  But what do I do? I don’t know if I should write her back immediately or let her calm down a little, or what.  And who am I writing? Avia sent me the bloody Howler, although I could hear Emia crying in the background…I really don’t know what to do.  Help me out here, James.

-Siri

Lily, meanwhile, was speedily skimming her letter.

Lil-

Emia has been crying for the past couple days…I don’t know what to tell her.  I sent Sirius a really angry Howler, but he hasn’t responded.  Emia’s so sad…he basically told her he didn’t want anything to do with her.  That he and Lasombra were perfectly happy together.  I don’t even know what to say.  It doesn’t sound like something Sirius would do, but he’s changed.  He’s acted differently since Emia left Hogwarts; you’ve noticed it too, haven’t you?  He never smiles anymore…only when he’s with her.  And why is he with her?  That whore is the reason this whole drama started in the first place…why’s he with her? Anyway, I really need to know if you’re on my side with this one, Lil.  I know James is really important to you, but you’re not dating him anymore, and we’ve been your best friends for about five years.  Emia needs your help.

Love, Avie

A blazing determination erupted in Lily’s emerald eyes after finishing her letter.  Of course I’ll support Emie…the twins have never lied to me or given me any reason not to trust them.  I love them like sisters; they’ve been there for me through everything.  James isn’t really relevant to this situation, it’s Emia and Sirius…and I choose Emie.

Meanwhile, similar thoughts were dwelling in the recesses of James’ mind.  I’ll help Sirius, he never gets the support he deserves…I don’t really like Lasombra, but if he says he did nothing to upset Emia, I’ll just assume she’s back to her old drama queen self…maybe she just wants to steal Sirius back, after all, Lasombra and Sirius have almost outlasted that record relationship of Emia and Sirius…she’s probably just jealous.

Lily looked sadly over at James.  “Was yours about Emia and Sirius?”

He nodded silently.

Lily arose from the couch and began to pace the living room, thoughts flooding her head.  After awhile, she asked softly, “Are you going to help him?”

James looked up at her stonily. “Someone has to defend him, Lily.”

Her eyes blazed, and she replied, “It doesn’t always have to be you, you know!  Remus and Peter are people too! Why can’t they take his side?!”

James snorted at her comment, and said cynically, “First of all, you know as well as I that the greatest feat is winning us over.  Me and you.  We are what matter to Avia, Emia and Sirius.  You’re their best friend, I’m Sirius’.  In the past, well…we’ve decided things together, but I guess I have to go against you for once.  Secondly, Remus will probably not be asked.  Avia doesn’t want to pressure her boyfriend, and Sirius has known him since the first train to Hogwarts…they won’t make him choose.  The only reason they’re even asking you to choose is because we’re not together anymore, which oh yes, is your fault too.”

Lily’s eyes widened at his audacity, and then they traveled to the floor.   “I thought we weren’t going to talk about that.”

James rolled his eyes and replied, “No.  You weren’t going to talk about that.  I complied because I always comply with you.  I never contest your decisions, and I try to be so nice! Well, for once, I’m disagreeing, and look how it’s affecting you! You refuse to let me make my own choices, even now that we’re broken up!”

Lily shook her head, stating plainly that she disagreed.

He sighed, and arose from the couch.  “Look, Lily, I don’t have time for this.  I’m on Sirius’ side, that’s it, end of story.  You’re Head Girl, I’m Head Boy, and we’ll work with one another on a professional and businesslike level.  But professional is where our relationship will stay.”

With that, he took some Floo Powder out of his pocket, threw it into the flames and shouted, “The Blacks!”

And if you live by the rules of "it's over"
then I'm sure that that makes sense

  *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Lily’s eyes glistened as the last embers burned out of her fireplace.  She had lost him forever.

I chose my friends over my boyfriend…who really technically isn’t my boyfriend.  I did what everyone tells you to do in this situation, side with your friends.  I want to help Emia.  I was right…right?

Lily shook the questioning thoughts out of her head and walked up the staircase to her bedroom.  Grabbing a small suitcase from her closet, she began to frantically pack.  I’ll go to Avia and Emia’s for awhile…we can all be angry with men together! Maybe then, I won’t feel so unbelievably…alone.

She closed the suitcase and ran downstairs, and taking a small pad of paper, she wrote a quick note to her parents.

Mum, Dad-

I’m going to Emia and Avia for a couple weeks…I’ll come back to pack for Hogwarts, don’t worry.  I’ll keep in touch with you through Emia’s owl, Helena.  I’m sorry I didn’t plan this sooner and give you notice, but Emia’s having problems with Sirius, and I want to be there for her.  Love you both!

-Lily

Realizing she never let the owls go after they had delivered their mail, she opened the sliding door, and the two magnificent birds flew off into the sky. Lily closed the door, and turned to the fireplace.  Taking some extra Floo Powder James had given her earlier that summer; she glanced at it for a moment sentimentally before throwing it into the fireplace.

Lily walked into the flames and shouted, “Aunt Brunhilda’s!”

  *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Lily brushed the soot off of her white fitted t-shirt and jeans.  She emerged from the fireplace in Avia and Emia’s room, only to find Emia tossing and turning in her bed.  Avia sat somberly in a chair by Emia’s bed, gently brushing her twins’ hair away from her sweating forehead.  Emia’s eyes were closed, but they were shut tightly, as if in frustration.  Her fists were clenching the sheets with white knuckles, and the comforter lay in disarray on the floor, kicked off the bed some time ago.

Avia looked up as Lily walked out of the fireplace and into the dark room.  “Hi, Lil,” she whispered.

Avia’s face looked very careworn and tired.  Of course she’s tired, Lily thought to herself. It was a full moon a couple days ago.  And she’s been busy comforting Emia, she probably hasn’t gotten any sleep…

“What’s wrong with her?” Lily whispered to Avia.

Avia sighed and looked over at her twin.  “She never sleeps.  Emia’s been crying since he gave her the letter, but that’s just the daytime.  In the night, she struggles and kicks, she has so many nightmares.  She’s started to scream in her sleep.  I wake her up, and she has no idea she’s said a thing.  Aunt Brunhilda and I don’t know what to do with her, the doctors have nothing to help heartbreak,” she said sadly.

Lily’s heart ached for Emia.  She looked at the floor, then back up to Avia.  “Avie, you go to bed, you look like you haven’t slept in a few days.  I’ll keep watch over Emia, maybe I’ll find something for her in your aunt’s spellbooks…a Calming Charm or something.  I’ve heard of them, but I don’t remember the exact ingredients.”

Avia smiled.  “Thank you so much…Sleep sounds rather wonderful right now.”

The blonde quickly walked over to her own bed, and sighed contentedly into her soft pillow as sleep descended over her entire body.

Lily, meanwhile, smiled down at the twins, checked to make sure Emia was still asleep, and satisfied that she was indeed, asleep, Lily walked over the bookshelf.  This one looks interesting, she thought to herself as her hand traveled down the different spines to land on a green one with silver embossing.  The title on the spine was Difficultas a Amor.  Lily sat down at the desk, and carefully lit the lamp that sat on the desk.  She flipped to a page that looked interesting, and began reading.

Difficultas a Amor

Chapter 6
Love doesn’t always turn out the way one hopes.  Sometimes there is heartbreak, and all too often there is jealousy, deceit, unfaithfulness, and dissatisfaction.  Often relationships end, and though the person that ends the relationship is usually happy, the person who the relationship has been ended with is not always so lucky.  Heartbreak often occurs with this person, and that is what Difficultas a Amor hopes to remedy.  Symptoms of heartbreak are all-around unhappiness, nightmares, lessened interest in things one used to enjoy, loss of appetite.  These symptoms can eat away at a person, and sometimes, heartbreak is actually fatal.  Luckily, magical advancements can make many witches and wizards safe from this problem.

Lily stopped reading for a moment, and was rather shocked to realize that she had most of those symptoms.  Yes, sure, she had been the one that had broken up with James, but she still felt empty and unhappy…and often had to push herself to eat because she really had no desire to do so.  Lowering her eyes to the page again, she continued to read.

For a 48- hour relief from heartbreak, combine these ingredients according to the following directions-

-hair of a werewolf (let simmer with hot water and following ingredient, pixie dust, for an hour before adding to potion)

-pixie dust from freshly caught Cornish pixies (see above for preparation)

-a sliced tentacle of the Grindelwald squid (slice carefully into squares, allow for any old blood to drip out before boiling the squares and adding to potion)

*Grindelwald squid is exclusive to Polar Regions…certain apothecaries carry them, usually exclusive to Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade apothecaries.
-leaves of a teenage Mandrake (get leaves from Apothecary as teenage Mandrakes are extremely unpredictable, and boil leaves with squid squares.)

Lily sighed as she finished reading the ingredients.  The hair of a werewolf would be easy enough, Avia would probably know where in the forest she might have brushed up against, pixie dust was simple, every witch and wizard had some tucked away for a rainy day.  However, the Grindelwald squid was always difficult to happen upon, especially since last year, when the Ministry dubbed them “Extinct Magical Species”, and allowed the few that were still alive to live in peace with no poachers near Antarctica.  Teenage Mandrakes were difficult to catch, and Lily knew that very few Mandrakes grew during summer.  There was only one person Lily knew who would have all this, and she really didn’t want to write to him…but this was the only potion for heartbreak Lily had ever seen! She couldn’t just pass up the chance!

Finally decided, Lily took out a piece of parchment from the desk drawer, and dipped Emia’s quill in the ebony ink.

Dear Severus, she began.

Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

  *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Two days later, the ingredients came by owl post while all three girls were still sleeping.  Lily had decided to sleep on the couch in the girls’ room, as Emia was still sleeping fitfully, and Avia was so exhausted.  A letter was attached to the ingredients, and Lily pulled it off and read it to herself.

Dear Lily,

Thank you for you letter.  I was more than happy to help you out, Potter is an idiot, and even though the Heartbreak Potion is technically illegal, I want to see you happy.  I included double the amount because you mentioned that Emia was hurting as well…Black is also an idiot…both of you will be better off without them.  I hope everything works for you, Lily, and feel free to talk to me if you ever need some support.

-Severus

Lily looked up from the letter with a smile, Severus was always very sweet to her.  She unpacked the ingredients carefully, and began to work on the potion.  When done properly, preparation took only forty minutes, so Lily decided to start while the twins were still asleep.  How happy Emia would be to know that she could get a good night’s sleep for once!

  *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The potion was done quickly, and Lily ladled it into two beakers.  She walked softly over to Emia’s bed and said, “Emie! Wake up!”

Emia’s fists that were clenching the sheets so tightly relaxed at the sound of her name and her eyes popped open to look at her surroundings.

“Morning, sunshine!” Lily said cheerily.

“Oh, hi Lily…what are you so happy about?” Emia asked softly.

“I have a potion…for heartbreak.  I think it might help…both of us.”

Emia nodded knowingly, and arose from bed.  They walked over to the desk together and each picked up a glass.  “Cheers,” Lily said softy and clinked glasses with Emia.  They smiled and downed the glasses together.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Lily and Emia had a wonderful two day relief from heartbreak, but on the third day three identical owls came bearing their Hogwarts letters and supply lists.  It was late August, and Lily knew she would have to leave the twins soon to go home and pack.  She was becoming much attached to their daily routine together, and Emia and Lily depended on one another to get through the tumble of emotions that both of them were experiencing.  Avia had become the strong one of the group, the steady lifesaver that both Emia and Lily depended on for sound advice and soothing hugs.  Avia had spent so much time with her friends, she really had not given much of a thought to Remus.  She didn’t really know where they were in their relationship, or where he stood on the Emia/ Sirius crisis.  Avia didn’t really want to know.  She didn’t think she could take it if Remus sided with Sirius, especially after what he had done.

“Do you want to get the supplies today?” Lily asked softly, looking out the window.

Emia sat in her bed, hands grasping her knees desperately, as the sorrow set in again.  “I suppose. I really don’t care,” Emia whispered.

Avia looked at both of them with concern.  “Is the potion wearing off?” she asked quietly.

Lily’s green eyes looked at Avia with sarcasm sparking in her voice.  “What does it look like?”

Avia recoiled, and began to skim the letter in search of what supplies she would need to get today.  “Are you two going to get more supplies for the potion?”

Emia looked at her morosely.  “I can’t live like this, Avia!  I can’t sleep when I don’t have that potion, and yet, I’m becoming aware of how dependent I am upon it!  I get two days of happiness to sink back into this hellhole all over again! It brings my hopes up just to let them down…I don’t know if I can take it again, and yet I don’t know how to live without taking it.”

Lily just nodded at Emia’s speech, signifying that she felt the same way.

Avia’s eyes widened with emotion, afraid to speak.  Should I forbid them from using it?  Look at the effect it is having on them! But if they don’t take it, Emia probably won’t sleep a wink all year!

Sighing, Avia said, “I’m not going to tell you not to take it, or to take it.  Get the ingredients today, and you two will have to make the decision for yourselves the kind of life you are willing to lead.  I’m not going to be involved in this decision.”

Emia and Lily just nodded, and Avia gathered her supply list, money, and some Floo Powder.  “Are you two ready?” she asked.
At the nods she received, she threw in the powder, stepped in the flames and shouted, “Diagon Alley!”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was then
Will be there still

Avia’s eyes widened as she saw four very familiar faces sitting at a table together across the Leaky Cauldron.  Oh no, they’re here! What will Emia and Lily say?  What will they do?  They’ve just gotten off the potion!

Remus waved Avia over, and she shook her head with a smile, noticing the stony expressions of Sirius and James.

Sooner than Avia would have liked, Emia came out of the fireplace, brushing soot off of her blue shirt and jeans, and carefully patting down her hair.

Lily came too, just seconds later, and Emia and Lily stood in shock at the sight before them.  Of all the days for the guys to be in Diagon!

Sirius looked sullenly at Emia, and she looked to the floor.  James and Lily held a gaze for a moment before Lily dropped it, sadly.

Avia smiled nervously at the two girls and then whispered, “So, let’s go, shall we?”

Emia and Lily silently nodded, and the three exited the Leaky Cauldron, thankfully averting a public debacle.
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on....

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Later, in the Apothecary-

Lily smiled as she found pixie dust on sale for just 5 sickles a spoonful, and eagerly put some into a bag and took in to the counter, where she already had lots of Grindelwald eel waiting, (the man had to go into his back stores for the stuff, and doubled the price, but Lily was desperate) and plenty of teenage Mandrake leaves.  She would be able to get the werewolf hair rather easily from Avia or Remus, and she did not want to rouse suspicion from the store owner anyway, as Grindelwald eel was only used in Love Potions of some sort (which were definitely illegal according to the Wizard’s Act of 1783) and Movement Potions.  If she bought the werewolf hair, the owner would definitely know what she was trying to make, and that could be a problem.  Lily smiled to herself as he rang up her total on the register.  Let him think I’ve got arthritis, that’s just fine with me.

Wow, 20 Galleons, Lily mused to herself, reaching into her money bag.  This potion could become very expensive…

Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
