Chapter Four: The Initiation and Lost Owls

As the Gryffindors walked up to their dorm, Sirius and James pooled ideas. “What should his initiation be?” James asked Sirius.

“Well,” said a thoughtful, calculating Sirius, “something that will prove his worth as a Marauder.  Something similar to the stuff we do, but maybe not quite as difficult, as he’s doing it alone.”

“Agreed,” James replied, “perhaps….we should….nah…”

“Have Pete prank Snape?” Sirius asked, finishing James’ sentence.  Sirius continued, “No, you’re right, it’s already done…it’s getting tired. Hmmm….I have an idea. What about Lily?”

“What about her?!” James said, becoming very tense. He did not like to talk about Lily Amiel Evans if he could help it.

Sirius replied, “Aw, cool your jets, man.  I know as well as you do that you have a thing for her.  But I was thinking…what if we let Lily pick Peter’s initiation?”

“B-but, she’s not even a Marauder…and she’s too perfect to play pranks.  She’s a shoo-in for prefect status, all of us know it.”

At this, Remus nodded, supporting James’ argument.

“Well,” Sirius continued, “I disagree.  There was a glint in her eyes, and I think she just might help us. You may be crazy about her, James, but you don’t know her that well.”

Then the Fat Lady opened, and all the Gryffindors went up to their dorms.

“But Lily, he’s just so cute,” Emia continued about James.

Lily sighed and said, “He just plays stupid pranks on people, doesn’t he?”

Avia sadly confirmed this with a nod, and Lily said, “SEE? That settles it. I don’t have time for boys anyway.”

Back in the boys’ dorm, the boys were finally really getting to know the boy they had shared a dorm with for the past four years.

Peter began, “Uh, well, my mum is a singer…and my dad’s, uh, well…uh…”

Remus looked up from his trunk with his kind blue eyes, “What is it, Peter?”

Peter gulped, and continued, “He was an Auror…he died a couple days ago.”

James’ and Sirius’ plans for initiation stopped, and they looked up at Peter as well.

“I’m so sorry, Peter…” Remus soothed.

“It’s okay, I know he died doing what he loves,” Peter lamented.

“Yes, he definitely did,” soothed Remus.

In the girls’ dorm, they were also discussing Peter.

Emia asked, “Why do you think he doesn’t have any friends? He certainly seems-”

“-nice enough,” Avia finished.

Lily looked up with a grin; she thought it was hilarious when the twins finished each others’ sentences.

“Oh bloody hell!” Lily said loudly, clearly panicking.

“Lily Amiel (B/A/N-I pronounce this A-me-el…just so ya know) Evans, what the bloody hell have you lost now?!” Emia asked, panicking as well.

“Where in the name of Merlin is Hermia?” Lily asked, clearly frustrated.

“How do you lose a three foot tall OWL?!” Avia asked, getting very exasperated.

“Well…I think…I think…I think I had her at King’s Cross… oh…um…well, maybe I forgot her in my room.”

Lily had a habit of losing things (B/A/N-like ME), Emia and Avia greatly feared for her when she got old and gray.  She’d lose her mind if it wasn’t already in her head.  Lily jotted down a furiously quick note to her family.

            Hey Dad,

Hogwarts is great. I just…well…I just…um. Okay, I lost Hermia. Where’s my owl? Do you remember if I brought her to King’s Cross? I think I might have left her in my room. If that’s the case, then please let her out of her cage and tell her to come here. She’ll understand. She knows where I am. Thanks so much Dad, I love you! Tell Mum and Petty I say hello!

With Love from Your Little Princess

Yes, Lily thought, that sounded about right.

“Hey Emie, can I borrow Helena?”

Emia smiled when she heard her nickname, and replied, “Of course, Lil.”

Lil sealed her letter and attached it to the beautiful snowy owl’s leg.  Lil pet Helena absentmindedly for a couple minutes, and sent the owl on its long journey back to Lily’s house in London.  Lily smiled when she thought about what Petunia would say when the owl arrived during her breakfast tomorrow morning.

“Hehe…Petty needs to have more fun, honestly…” and with that thought, she fell in her scarlet four-poster bed.  She didn’t even change into pajamas first.
