CP's new cage and the steps taken to build it
Kind of an icky picture (color), but this is the base of CP's new cage.  It's a 31"x31" square piece of plywood.
This is the same piece of plywood partially covered with a piece of vinyl shelf liner from Wal-Mart.  The liner is non-adhesive (no glue on the back), so I used 1/4" staples and a staple gun to attach it to the plywood.  This will protect the wood from guinea pig pee and water.
Here the plywood is completely covered with the liner.  The center is overlapped a good 3".
This is the back of the covered plywood.  Since plywood can eventually cause splinters in humans and too-curious kitties, I folded the liner over the edges and stapled them, as well.
Here I was checking the positioning of the grids I used to build CP's cage.  I marked spots to drill holes for the zip-ties I was going to use to secure the grids to the plywood.
This picture shows the placement of the zip-ties.  Each grid got 2 ties.  This was before they were cut.
This is pretty close to the finished cage.  All the ties have been cut, and 2 of the grids that make up the top are on.  Inside is a sheet and a couple of towels for a bed.  Lily, of course, can't help but walk around to check it out.
Here is the cage moved into the computer room and set up.  Inside is CP's weighted pigloo (so he can't flip it upside down), his hay box, and his food dish.  His water bottle is on the outside.  The corner of my keyboard and monitor are on the right.
Here be the finished cage!  All 4 grids are on top now, and CP is happily checking everything out.
The day after the cage was built, I got tired of having to pop out a top grid to get into the cage.  So, this picture was the result.  At the top of the grid centered in the picture are two zip-ties.  This creates the "hinge".  At the bottom (4th small square from the right) is a key ring clip.  CP used to be quite good at climbing, so it will keep him in and the cats from snoozing in it all the time.  In taking this picture, I caught CP getting a drink of water.
