Definitely an Eleven

December 4, l989

Monday morning found Dotty West still unpacking boxes from the move to Rockville, Maryland. The house was finally finished being renovated. It was a beautiful house that Lee and Amanda had decided to buy, but with all the renovations it had taken quite a bit of time to accomplish.

They had hoped to be moved in before Thanksgiving, but alas that was not to be. Thanksgiving had been so hectic with the sale of the house and having to pack everything. Plus, cooking a meal for five was no small task in a house filled with moving boxes. Luckily, Lillian decided to stay home this year. ‘I never thought I would be able to talk her out of coming here, but in the end she seemed to understand. Oh well, I guess I will have to make it up to her at Christmastime,’ Dotty thought to herself.

It was a sad day to pass when moving day finally arrived, ‘I am going to miss our home on Maplewood Drive, but we will make new memories in our new home,’ she thought, with a sad smile on her face as she closed the door to her old life. Originally when Amanda had told her that they were looking for a larger house, she had suggested that she might get a small apartment somewhere near. But Amanda would hear none of that, and Lee, of course, the darling that he is, absolutely refused to even consider me not living with them.’

‘It took me sometime to get over being annoyed with them, but I didn’t let on that I forgave than sooner than I had; I had to let them stew for a little while. Lee has turned out to be an excellent stepfather to Phillip and Jamie and I’ve never seen Amanda happier in my life. So when they told me about the new house, I let them talk me out of getting my own apartment. I hope someday there will be another little one running around that will call me grandma. If the amount of time they spend in the bedroom is any indication, they should be making an announcement sometime in the near future.’

The move was finally over; the furniture had been delivered over the weekend and put in the proper rooms. Now the enormous task of unpacking all of the moving boxes loomed before them. Lee and Amanda had gone into work early in the morning for a meeting, Phillip and Jamie had just gotten on the bus that would take them to school, leaving Dotty home alone amidst all the boxes.

Over the weekend everyone had taken care of unpacking and fixing up their own bedrooms, leaving the rest of the house until later except for the kitchen, of course, that was a main priority, especially with two teenage boys. After having another cup of coffee and piece of poppy seed cake, Dotty decided to help Amanda by starting to unpack the boxes in the den. Christmas was only three weeks away, and the sooner the house was put in order, the sooner everyone could get into a festive mood.

Unpacking the box with knick-knacks, she dusted each one off before she placed them on the shelf. ‘If Amanda doesn’t like their placement she can always move them. At least it will be fewer boxes that have to be unpacked’, Dotty reasoned.

After several hours, she decided to fix a light lunch and get an early start on their dinner so she went to the kitchen to make preparations.

Entering the den once again she eyed the boxes marked books deciding to unpack those next. An hour later she was still placing books on the bookshelf. ‘Thank goodness we have ample bookshelves, I had no idea this family owned this many books’, she thought as she emptied yet another box.

Opening the next box, she noticed it was filled with magazines. I wonder if this belongs to one of the boys, as she started to flip through them. Most of them were car magazines, but then she came across some about exotic travel, realizing these must be Lee’s and not the boys’ so she started to close the box when the title to one of them caught her eye.

‘Spy Boy, now what kind of name is that for a magazine?’ she mumbled as she picked it up and started leafing through its pages. ‘What is this?’ Dotty said out loud, ‘this is a picture of Amanda in what looks like a French maid’s outfit. My she does look cute, but in a magazine for everyone to see her, I can’t understand why she would pose for such a photograph.’ Reading the article about her home life and the cross-reference to Lee’s centerfold peeked Dotty’s curiosity.

Going through the rest of the magazines in the box, she finally came across Spy Girl with a gorgeous photograph of Lee in a suit on the cover. ‘My daughter picked a most handsome man to marry, if I do say so myself.’ Turning the pages she finally came upon the centerfold.

Staring back at her was a picture of Lee sitting on a wooden stool, one leg bent on the lower perch, wearing nothing but his watch, a tie and what appeared to Dotty to be a very small towel. ‘Oh my, is that what I think it is,’ Dotty pondered as she brought her face close to picture trying to focus her eyes. ‘This is not going to work, I wonder where I left my eyeglasses?’ she contemplated. Placing the magazine on the coffee table, she went to her bedroom to search for her eyeglasses.

Finding her eyeglasses she returned to the den, turning the light on that sat on the end table next to the couch, she sat down and picked up the magazine. ‘Now let me get a closer look. I’m sure my eyes were playing tricks on me, I’m almost certain I did not see what I thought I saw,’ she speculated as she put her glasses on.

Looking at the picture once again, Dotty made a closer inspection. ‘Oh my, that is the tip of his penis sticking out from under the towel,’ Dotty
exclaimed. ‘Well I never thought when I told Amanda on a scale of one to ten, that Lee was an eleven, that I would be that accurate in my description of him. My oh my its no wonder Amanda always has a smile on her face. If I were any younger, I would have given her a run for her money and gone after him myself. Especially after what I have just seen,’ she thought to herself.

Placing the magazines inside the box on the top, she went to start

laundry and finish making dinner.

After dinner that night, when Dotty had gone to the kitchen to do the dishes and the boys had gone upstairs to do their homework, Lee turned to Amanda as they walked into the den, “Is Dotty acting a little strange tonight?” he asked his wife.

“No, why do you ask,” she answered him.

“She seems to be rattling on about different things and having a hard time looking me in the eye. I hope I haven’t done anything to get her upset with me,” he said as he surveyed the den, noticing that a lot of boxes had been unpacked.

“It is a new house, maybe she just needs a little time to adjust to the
move,” Amanda told him.

“I hope you’re right,” he said as he went to a box to open it. “Umm,
Amanda, did you open this box?” he asked as he starred down at his cover issue of Spy Boy.

“No. Why?” as she walked over to him and saw what he was looking at. “Oh My Gosh,” was all she could say. Picking up the magazine she saw Spy Girl underneath. “You don’t think she looked at these, do you?”

“I honestly don’t remember packing these on the top of the box, I thought I had them buried somewhere in the middle,” he stated as he heard Dotty entering the den.

Coming into the den, “Well the kitchen is all cleaned up, I’m going to head upstairs for a nice long bath and to read a book before I turn in for the night,” Dotty said.

Turning to her mother, “mother did you unpack all of these boxes today?”

“Why yes dear, I wanted to give you a hand, so I started in here this
morning, I think that box of magazines is Lee’s,” she said as she pointed to the box Lee was standing next to.

Lee glanced at Dotty, “Yea these should have been put in our bedroom.”

“Well goodnight,” Dotty said as she started to leave the room. Turning
around with her arms crossed, holding her chin with her hand and tapping her index finger on her chin, “Oh, by the way Lee, nice umm package you have there,” she said as she glanced at his lower anatomy. Looking them both in the eye, “goodnight dears, I’ll see you in the morning,” as she left to go upstairs.

Amanda looked up at Lee, who had turned the brightest red she had ever seen on a human being. “Oh my gosh she did see IT.”

Lee just stood there his mouth agape.
