3-9 Weighted Averages

Anticipatory Set/Opening Activity: Transparency 3-9
Solve each equation for the variable specified.
1. 6s + t= s-1, for s
2. 4c-d= 4a-2c +1, for c
3. (7g+h/b)= -2, for h
4. Write an equation and solve it for t. Four more than a number b is the same as nine times another number t plus 2.
5. Use the formula A= (1/2) h (a + b) to find the height of the trapezoid if a= 8 cm, b= 17 cm. (Trapezoid Diagram).
6. If (2a-b/5)=d, what is the value of b?
A. -2a+5d     B. 2a+5d     C. -2a -5d     D. 2a-5d

Specific Lesson Outline and Notes

Weighted average: The sum of the product of the number of units and the value per unit divided by the sum of the number of units represented by M.

Mixture problems: Problems in which 2 or more parts are combined into a whole.

Ex1: Jeri likes to feed her cat gourmet cat food that costs $1.75 per pound. However, food at that price is too expensive so she combines it with a cheaper cat food that costs $0.50 per pound. How many pounds of cheaper food should Jeri buy to go with 5 pounds of gourmet cat food, if she wants the average price to be $1.00 per pound?

Ex2: To provide protection against freezing, a cars radiator should contain a solution of 50% antifreeze. Darryl has 2 gallons of a 35% antifreeze solution. How many gallons of 100% antifreeze should Darryl add to his solution to produce a solution of 50% antifreeze?
