3-5 Solving Equations with the Variable on Each Side

Anticipatory Set/Opening Activity: Transparency 3-5
1. Solve the problem by working backward. Two thirds of a number plus seven is negative three. Find the number.
Solve each equation
2. -32 + 2n = 7n -7
3. (34 - x)/9 = 2
Write an equation and solve each problem.
4. Find three consecutive even integers whose sum is zero.
5. Joel purchased a pen for $1.29 and six notebooks at teh school store. If the total bill was $12.63, what was the cost of one notebook?
6. Which of the following equations has the same solution as (n/2) - 9 = -5
A) 2n + 5 = 21     B) 9 = (n/2) + 8     C) (n/2) - 5 = 9     D) 2n - 9 = -20

Lesson Notes:

Identity: equation that is true for every value of the variable

Steps for Solving Equations (p 151)
  1. Use the distributive Property to remove teh grouping symbols
  2. Simplify the expression on each side of teh equal sign
  3. Use the addition and/or subtraction properties of equality to get the bariables on one side of the equal sign and the numbers without the variables on the other side of the equal sign
  4. Simplify the expression on each side of equal sign
  5. Use the multiplication or Division property of equality to solve

*Easy remember: inverse order of operations

Example 1: solve the following equations, check your solutions
A) 8 + 5s = 7s - 2
B) (1/3)(18 + 12q) + 6(2q - 7)
C) 8(5c - 2) = 10(32 +4c)
D) 4(t + 20) = (1/5)(20t + 400)
E) 8(b + 1) + 4 = 3(2b - 8) - 16
