3-2 Solving Equations using Addition and Subtraction

3-2 Solving Equations using Addition and Subtraction

Addition Property of Equality
for any numbers a, b, and c, if a = b, then a + c = b + c
  ie: 7 = 7, so 7 + 3 = 7 + 3

Equivalent Equations: equations that have the same solution
Solve an equation: find all values of the variable that makes the equation a true statement

Example 1: Solve, then check your solution
A) h - 12 = - 27

B) k + 63 = 92

Subtraction Property of Equality
for any numbers a, b, and c, if a = b, then a - c = b - c
  ie: 17 = 17, so 17 - 9 = 17 - 9

Example 3: Solve c + 102 = 36. Then check your solution.

Example 4: Solve y = (4/5) = (2/3) in two ways

Example 5: Write an equation for the problem. Then solve the equation and check your solution.
Fourteen more than a number is equal to twenty-seven.
