Lesson Notes

Probability: likelihood of an event occuring can be expressed as a fraction, decimal, or percent.
Simple Event: thing trying to measure or predict
Sample Space: set of all possible outcomes

Probability
P(a) = (number of favorable outcomes)/(total number of possible outcomes)
a: simple event

Example 1
a. Find the probability of rolling a number greater than 2 on a dice
b. a class contains 6 students with black hair, 4 with blonde hair, and 2 with red hair. Find...
   P(black)
   P(red or brown)
   P(not blonde)

**probability is somewhere between 0 and 1. (WHY?)

***diagram***
Equally Likely: when there are n outcomes, and the probability of each one is 1/n

Odds → another way to express the chance of an event occuring.

Odds: (number of ways an even can occur)/(number of ways an event cannot occur)
OR expressed as successes/failures

Odds can also be written as success : failures

Example 2: Find the odds of rolling a number greater than 2

Example 3: A card is selected at random from a standard deck of 52 cards. What are the odds against selecting a 2 or 3?

Example 4: Melvin is waiting to board a flight to Washington, D.C. According to the airline, the flight he is waiting for is on time 80% of the time it flies. What are the odds that the plane will be on time?
