2-2 Adding Rational Numbers

**Notes are icomplete, they do not contain the diagrams**

Method 1: use a number line

Example 1: use a number line to find each sum.
a) 8 + (-5)
b) (-1) + -4

Method 2: Use absolute values
Same Sign: add their absolute values
sum has same sign as the addends
Different Signs: subtract the lesser absolute value from the greater absolute value
sum has same sign as the number with the greater absolute value

Example 2: Find each sum
a) 6 + (-14)
b) (-2/7) + (-3/7)

2-2 Subtracting Rational Numbers

Opposite Numbers: 2 numbers with the same absolute value
One is positive, one is negative
   ex) 3 and -3

Opposite Numbers are additive inverses- two numbers whose sum is always zero

Opposite Numbers can be used to subtract rational numbers

To subtract a rational number, add its additive inverse
    a - b = a + (-b)
    8 - 15 = 8 + (-15) = -7

Example 3: Find each difference
a) 6 - 14
b) 8 - (-5)

Example 4: In the past year, a publishing company's stock went from $52.08 per share to $70.87 per share. Find the change in the price of stock.
