Function: relationship between input and output
Coordinate System: used to graph functions
aka coordinate plane
y-axis: vertical axis
x-axis: horizontal axis
origin: where axes intersect
(0, 0) are the coordinates
Ordered Pair: set of numbers on coordinates, written in the form (x, y)
x-coordinate: x-value of an ordered pair
y-coordinate: y-value of an ordered pair
Example 1: Given the graph on p43, name the ordered pair at point E and explain what it means.
Independent variable: input, x ← can choose any value
Dependent Variable: output, y ← value gotten from the input
Example 2: Identify the independent/dependent variables from example 1.
Example 3: The graph represents the temperature in Mrs. Ling's classroom on a winter school day. Describe what is happening in the graph.
Relation: set of ordered pairs
Domain: first number in an ordered pair, usually x
Range: second number in ordered pair, usually y
Example 4: Identify the domain and range of example 1.
Homework: p46 #6 8, 10, 12, 14-19, 26, 28, 30
