Open Sentences

Open Sentence: mathematical statement with one or more variables.
Solving the Open Sentence: process of finding a value for a variable that results in a true sentence.
Solution: value for teh variable that makes a sentence true.
Equation: sentence that contains an equal sign.
Replacement Set: set of numbers from which a replacement for a a variable may be chosen.
Set: collection of objects or numbers.
   ex) {a, b, c}     {baseball, football, soccer, volleyball}
Element: object or number in a set.
Solution Set: set of elements from the replacement set that make an open sentence true.

Example 1: Find the solution set for each equation if the replacement set is {2, 3, 4, 5, 6}.

A. 4a + 7 = 23







B)3(8 - b) = 6







Example 2: Solve using the order of operations.
[5(8 + 2)]/ [18 - (5 - 3)³]; = k







Inequality: open sentence that contains the symbol >, ≥, ≤, or <.

Example 3: Find the solution set for z + 11 ≥ 32 if the replacement set is {20, 21, 22, 23, 24}
