Louis and Delima Caners
as told by
Louis Caners
When we were young there was a party every
week at which our neighbours all gathered. That is how Delima and I
met. We traveled with a horse and buggy in the summer and a cutter in
the winter .We went to baseball games in the summer, and in the winter
we went skating on the river by Joe Bouchard's place. Delima was very
clumsy on her skates and I always had to hold her up. She was very
bashful.
One day, I hitched an old plug of a horse
that I had, to the buggy, and we went for a romantic drive. We drove
for awhile and found a pretty spot where we stopped, got out, and sat
on a log. I put my arm around her and managed to get up the nerve to
say, "Delima, you and I have been going out for quite awhile and I
think a lot of you - I really love you. Would you be willing to get
married to me?" In a
...
Them. The following night I had three men
watching and waiting in the hayloft. The bear did come back, one of
them shot at it and missed. The night after that it came back again and
passed right in front of the house. Using a .32 rifle, I shot through
the window but didn't think that I had hit him because he took off and
tore out part of our picket fence. You can imagine that the men who
were in the hayloft waiting for that bear were very disappointed that I
had shot at it, since they were hoping for a good chance to do so. A
few days later it went to Gauthier's and grabbed a young pig and ran
away with it. After that we did not hear anymore about it, so someone
must have shot it.
My dad was a professional musician, and we
continued to enjoy hearing him play the piano on his frequent visits to
our home. I often accompanied him with the violin. I always enjoyed
music very much. Dad was the organist at our church for twenty-five
years. After he died I took his place, as there was no one else
available at the time. I have been the organist for over thirty years
now. It was not very easy for me because my playing could not compare
with his, but I did my best.
It was always a great pleasure when my
sister Ina, and my brother Leo came home for the holidays. It was then
that we got together to play and sing sacred and popular music. Those
were really very happier times, never to be forgotten.
Del and I are retired and living in our own
home on the farm. We enjoy going out to play bingo and to the senior
citizen's club, as well as visiting our children and neighbours. We
celebrated our fiftieth wedding anniversary with our family and friends
in May, 1981. We enjoy the company of our children and grandchildren
when they come to visit us. Our family has been, and continues to be, a
great blessing to us. We have much to be thankful for.
