Church celebrates 100th birthday
The congregation of the Pt Alexander Presbyterian
Church celebrates the 100th birthday of their church building on Sunday
September 27 at 9 am. They will be singing some of the old hymns and
everyone is warmly invited to join them.
The building is the oldest church building sill regularly used in the
Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie and McKay townships. However, the history of the
congregation goes back even further. A group of Scottish and Irish
Presbyterians
met for a while in the one-room SS No 3 Rolph school house, which no
longer exists. As membership increased they decided to build a church.
Construction was finished in 1887 on land donated by John McKinley and
Isaac Moore. The building had cost $500 and had taken a year to
complete. Initially, a wood stove provided heat but later the building
was ducted for an oil furnace, electricity replaced oil lamps, and the
pump organ was replaced with an electric organ.
The church was a mission church and relied on travelling minsters to
conduct services. The first minister was Mr Logie. He would travel by
train and was met at the station by a member with a horse and buggy.
The minister would stay in "the minister's room" at the home of Mrs
Alfred Allen. From Pt Alexander he would also travel to Rapides des
Joachims and Deux Rivieres to conduct services for those Presbyterian
congregations.
In 1925 the United Church of Canada was formed from the union of
Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian churches. The Chalk River
Presbyterian Church voted to join the United Church, and the Pt
Alexander Presbyterian Church building became the property of the
United Church but its congregation remained Presbyterian.
Between 1925 and 1956 the building was used at various times for
united, Salvation Army and Evangelical services. The Presbyterian
congregation would join them in worship. Although there were no
Presbyterian ministers visiting during those years, the members of the
congregation still had Sunday School either by correspondence or in a
member's home, often staying for lunch.
In 1956 the Presbyterian repurchased the church for $1 and began
repairing the building. Sometime during the 1950's the steeple had
blown off the roof and was never replaced. The church reopened January
6, 1957. There have
been nine ministers serving the congregation including Mr Purvis
