Photography

I had no clue I liked photography until my mom got me a digital camera for Christmas last year. Now, my friends are all completely sick of me, as evidenced by the increasing number of pictures in which they are glaring or giving that long-suffering look. What few decent shots I've taken, I owe to Mimi's advice and to Bina and Sarah's remorseless culling.

The following are practically the only decent shots I've taken. Please excuse the amatuerish quality- I am an amatuer. Dancing pictures are also on this page.

Please click here if you feel the need to take one of my pictures. Thank you.

Dancing...

There once were pictures of Bina and Sarah dancing on this page. In order to fit more pictures, I have made a deal with Bina to have her display the dance photos instead of me. She has lots more room. In the next few weeks, they'll be arriving on her page (I hope).

Let me share one bit of information I learned with this camera: the sports setting requires lots of light. It's best to use a well-lit studio or do them outdoors in bright light. These digital cameras are not the greatest for sports photos, but if you work with them long enough, you'll figure it out.

I'm also working on combining some landscapes and dance shots to make the backgrounds nicer. I apologize for the slowness, but it can take up to an hour to get one perfected, and it's rare that I have that kind of time for one picture.

Camera...

The camera I used for all of these photos is Sony's Digital Mavica. It's a pretty decent camera except for two problems: it takes about 5 seconds to record a picture, so you can't snap them quickly, and the flash whites out the pictures completely when used indoors, so lighting can be a problem.

On the other hand, it has several nifty settings (portrait, landscape, sports, etc.) and programs (negative, black and white, sepia, and pastel). It also takes standard 2HD, IBM formatted disks and fits between 15 and 35 pictures per disk, depending on the setting and the amount of light. Especially for people who think they may be doing amateur photography and either need to practice or think they'll be taking lots of pictures, this camera makes sense. There are still too few pixels to be useful for serious photography.

As for durability, I've had mine for over a year, and I've really put it to the test. It's been dropped more times than I can count, it's gotten damp from humidity and rain, and it's had a disk jammed in it, all without apparent effect. The battery is rechargable and still gets up to 2 hours with each charging. If you're looking for a brand that's hard to kill, this one is it. I haven't even seen any degradation in the picture quality from all the mishandling.

If you have information on other digital cameras, I'll be looking for a new one in a couple of years, so please email me with your comments. Good luck with your pictures!
