Hic Sunt Draconi explained (sort of) This is probably the second real poem I ever wrote. Everything before this point was forced, or lacked maturity, or was fluff. This one just appeared one day in the fall of my sophomore year of college. The title is entirely the fault of Jen, Thia, and other friends of mine who were using too much Latin in my presence that year. As for the meaning, it's not good enough to be subtle. It's more like a clue-by-four. I would, however, like to point out that I was deliberately trying to play on the title theme: first, that we think of ourselves as dragons, rather than reserving that status for the unknown of space; and second, that we think we know the earth, but actually, we haven't charted it all, and even if we did, we still wouldn't understand it. So in a way, the dragons are still with us. But we are not the dragons, for all our pretensions. We are toddlers tearing up the house before going outside to play.
