| Ben's News Recently I discovered that I have diabetes, which is a show stopping moment in some ones life. I found out the hard way as usual though... usual for me anyway. I Haven't been able to feel much below my knees since having disk repair surgery on my back (hence the need for the walking cane) in February of 1997, just a few weeks before my son was born on April 1, 1997. So I did not feel the blisters developing on my feet, nor did I feel it when the biggest one (on my right big toe) burst. I discovered the blisters when I pulled my Specially made, electrically conductive, steel toed workboots off at the end of a 12 hour workday on Wednesday April 5, 2006 only to discover he end of my right sock was bloody. This led to the company nurse discovering the blisters. She then tested my blood sugar which read 257. She sent me home with orders to go to the emergency room, but typical me... I waited and went to see my doctor the next day. Boy was he pissed. I got the forty minute lecture and a series of return appointments to determine when he would release me to #1 wear shoes again and #2 go back to work. Doc said that those two dates may be different depending on my blood sugar's response to the medication. My sugar reading that morning in Doc's office was 225, he hasn't prescribed shots yet ... thank God. UPDATE: My sugar is out of control ... for a while anyway. It isn't looking like it will stay regulated any time soon as the holidays are upon us. It should settle back down to a normal range again about my son's birthday ... in April. God willing I see april. |
