Chapters 16-19
These are very interesting chapters. The Giver gives him the memory of war, and Jonas doesn't want to go backto the Annex room. I don't blame him! That's why I find their community strange. In our society, if you don't like your job, you can just quit and get a new one. But in their community, if you don't like your job, your stuck with it until you live in the house of old. That's just stupid! At least Jonas's job is honored.
My second reaction was when the Giver gives him the memory of
love and warmth. I don't understand why Jonas didn't know that the old people in the memory were grandparents. Hasn't he ever heard of grandparents? And also, he felt that they should have been in a house of old. Old people have rights, too. When people get to a certain age, the community just stuffs them into a house with other old people?! That's horrible! They just assume that old people can't do things on their own. Old doesn't mean useless! It means wise.
My final reaction is that Jonas's father killed a pour, innocent baby! All because he was an identical twin that was six ounces lighter than his brother. Just because people look the same, doesn't mean you have to kill one of them! I like our society better. There are many pairs of twins. I wonder what would happen if a birthmother had triplets. Would they kill two of them? That's insane!!! In our community, that wouldn't be calld releasing; that would be called muder!
