    Bruck Chun circled slowly. He reached out for the Force, he could feel it pulsing, and raging hot. It flowed through him easily. Using it he quickly located where his opponent was.

    The young initiate could hear the crowd of temple students cheering and could feel the eyes of the Jedi Masters on him. Now that Oafy-Wan had left the temple to become a farmer he was the oldest one here. The Masters would try to convince the Jedi Master Tahl to take him as her apprentice. She had been coming to the temple every day for a week now, surveying the students and watching them. Obviously the great Jedi Knight was very interested in taking someone as her Padawan Learner and if he had anything to say about it, it was going to be him.

    The Force told Bruck that his opponent had moved, he or she was being very cautious. He had to win this battle. It wasn't just a
stupid temple exercise used to test him this was an important battle. It was the battle that would finally convince Master Tahl to take him as her Padawan Learner, if he won.

    The opponent began to attack - slowly, cautiously, as if afraid to fight. Since both students were blindfolded the "enemy" was hesitating. Already impatient, the twelve-year-old student didn't wait any longer. He began to attack in a fury, slowly forcing his opponent into a corner. Bruck swung his lightsaber to make the final blow to the neck that would determine him the winner but was surprised when his lightsaber hit nothing but air.

    Anger boiled up inside of him. He had become too overconfident and had lost the Force's guidance, therefore allowing hisopponent to escape! Quickly the boy turned, lightsaber ready to attack, to finish what he had begun but before he could completely turn around something burnt his neck. It was the lightsaber of the other student.

    "Enough." Yoda called out. "Winner is Reeft."

    Angrily Bruck ripped off his blindfold but did his best to mask his feelings. He turned and bowed to his opponent, Reeft, and then Yoda. As he walked from the room he could hear the cheers of the students as Reeft bowed to them and waved.

    How could he let that happen? How could he, Bruck Chun, allow that stupid boy to defeat him? Obviously he had been tricking Bruck by acting scared, it wasn't fair! He wanted a rematch! But, he knew this would never happen. Bruck had allowed himself to be tricked. If he could allow it here in the safety of the Temple then he would most likely be led into a trap in a real battle. Anger boiled inside him, now Master Tahl would never take him! She would take Reeft instead! Bruck would be sent to work as a, a farmer just like that Obi-Wan. The thought of his former classmate and enemy made him boil over with hatred.

/There is nothing I can do/ Bruck told himself, /nothing at all/. The thought of being a farmer and loosing his dream of being a Jedi Knight was too much for the boy. Tears began to fall; swift, silent tears.

*            *            *            *            *            *

    Reeft entered the shower room. He was glad that he had won but he still worried about Master Tahl. /Would she accept him? Would she take him as her Padawan?/ She had never had a Padawan before, always she had preferred to fight alone, so why was she here now? Reeft knew that even if she didn't take him he would still have many more chances to become a Padawan. After all, he had only just turned barely turned twelve. The cut off line for becoming an apprentice was thirteen. Bruck on the other hand, Bruck would have no more chances The older boys birthday was in a week. He would probably be sent to be a farmer, just like Reeft's friend Obi-Wan. It made the boysad to think that Bruck's talents would be wasted in growing plants instead of helping save the galaxy, but then again he really wasn't Bruck's friend and didn't stay sad for long.

    After Reeft had changed into a fresh tunic he headed for his room. As he walked down the large corridor he took time to observe things he never had before. Today the stone walls of the Temple seemed warmer and friendlier than normal. As he got closer to the small room that was his, the young student stopped short at what he saw. There, standing outside the door of his room was Master Tahl. Hope surged through Reeft; perhaps she had decided to take him! Then the hope vanished, /what am I thinking?/ He asked himself. /She probably just wants to congratulate me. After all, I still have a few more months left of training to complete./

    Reeft quickened his pace just slightly so as not to keep the elder Jedi waiting. Obviously whatever it was that she wanted to say was very important to her, otherwise she wouldn't have taken the time to find his quarters and then wait there for him.

    "Ah, there you are Reeft, I wish to introduce you to someone." Tahl said in her usual quiet voice. Tahl stood with Master Binn Ibes at the door of Reeft's quarters. She had been here for a week, looking at the students studying to become Padawan's. Although she had never had a Padawan she came every year to look at them. Although she did want to eventually take a Padawan of her own she had also saw what choosing the wrong Padawan had done to her friend Qui-Gon Jinn when he accepted Xanatos. Xanatos had betrayed Qui-Gon and betrayed the Jedi Order. She wouldn't be as careless. The pain that shesaw in Qui-Gon was not something she wanted to feel. Every day this week she had come, studying the children as though looking for something in them that only she could see. This year she had not only been lookingfor a Padawan for herself, she had been looking to see if any of them would be a good match for Binn.

     Reeft noticed the other Jedi Knight standing beside her. "This is Master Binn Ibes." Tahl said, indicating the tall man at her left, "He watched you fight and he wishes to speak with you, I have been briefing him about the students at the temple and I wanted to introduce you first, but now, if you'll excuse me, I must go."

    Reeft had barely time to bow before Tahl was gone, apparently she was anxious to get away. He had never seen Master Ibes before, although he had heard of him. Master Ibes had just recently become a Jedi Knight and was now at the Temple to take his first Padawan. If Temple rumors could be trusted than Master Ibes was strong with the force and an excellent Knight. Some students even dared to go as far as to say that he could be a younger version of Master Qui-Gon Jinn, but then again, those were just temple rumors.

    "I watched you fight Reeft. But I do not understand, why did you pretend to be cautious and afraid when the fight started?" Binn Ibes began.

    "Because sir, I used the Force to discover the identity of my opponent. I recognized Bruck right away. Since I have watched Bruck fight before I know his strategies, and I knew that if I allowed him to become overconfident I could easily defeat him. Bruck's biggest faults are his anger and overconfidence. That is how he lost in the duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi."

    Binn Ibes nodded; he had heard of that battle. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Bruck Chun had sparred for Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Both had fought well, but with anger, and although Obi-Wan had won Qui-Gon had refused to take him as his Padawan. Instead the boy had been sent to Bandomeer to work as a farmer for the Agri-Corps. That was the last he had heard of them.

"I have seen video clips and holograms of your fights with other students." He continued, "you use a different strategy in each fight. Why?"

    "It is because sir, I have known each of the students at the temple for my whole life and I know their flaws, weaknesses, and strategies. This way I know how to fight them and hopefully win."

    Master Binn Ibes had also studied Reeft's fights withstudents he did not know and the boy had done rather well in those battles as well. For some strange reason he felt as though the Force was telling him to take Reeft as his Padawan but first he had to make sure. He didn't want to end up with a Padawan who he wouldn't be able to bond with. Binn asked Reeft other questions and after talking with the boyfor ten minutes he decided that Reeft was indeed the boy that the force was trying to tell him to take.

    "Reeft," Master Ibes said, making sure to make eye contact, "would you like to become my Padawan Learner?"

  Reeft drew a sharp breath; he was shocked; this was not what he
had expected. He had thought Master Binn Ibes was just questioning his fighting strategies. /He's asking me to be his Padawan!/ Reeft though to himself, out loud he replied with a small bow, "Yes, Master Binn Ibes, I would be honored to be your Padawan Learner."

    "Then come, and let us talk with Master Yoda about our next mission." Master Ibes said with a smile.

*            *            *            *            *            *

    Bruck sat on his bed. The tears of defeat and feelings of sorrow were gone and replaced instead by pride. "I won't let them send me to be a farmer! I won't!" Even as the words were spoken Bruck knew that he had no say in what his destiny was. There wasn't anything he could do. Unlessyes! Yes, there was one thing left that he could try.

    New hope rose in him. He could speak with Master Yoda, tell him that he needed a rematch, another fight. It could be with any student, he didn't care whom, just as long as he got the chance to prove that he could be a Padawan Learner. Bruck jumped up, there was no time to loose, and he had to go see Master Yoda right away.

*            *            *            *            *            *

    "Another fight there will not be Bruck." Yoda said, compassion in his voice, "lost you did, understand this you must. Wait in your room for orders you will. Be long it will not."

    "But Master Yoda, I don't want to be a farmer, I want to be a Jedi Knight!" Bruck said, trying to keep his emotions under control. He didn't want to become angry or upset, not here, not in front of Yoda.

    Yoda looked at him curiously, "Out of pride your wish is, not out of commitment. Because of Obi-Wan do you want to become a Knight. Gloat you will if you succeed. Have this we cannot. Go now you will."

    Bruck felt anger rising in him. He bowed and then left. It would be of no use to argue with the elder Jedi, he would only loose that as well.

    Bruck stalked down the large corridor toward his small room in the wing that had the student's rooms. /How could I have lost tothat stupid kid Reeft? How could I? I'll never be a knight now! Never!/ He thought to himself. He moved through the large temple with the feeling that the stone edifice had judged him unworthy.

    As the young initiate sat in his room he began to think, to come up with a plan. He was pretty sure that the Masters would call him before the Jedi Counsel. After all, Yoda had seemed pretty sure that the real reason he didn't want to become a farmer was because of Obi-Wan and well, unfortunately, he was right. Bruck's pride had taken over. He began to plan what he would say to the Counsel to change their mind, but he knew that there wasn't much he could do.

*            *            *            *            *            *

    Master Ibes and Reeft stood before the Jedi Counsel, waiting for their next mission.

    "Master Binn Ibes, are you sure you wish to take this boy for your Padawan? You must remember that you have only seen two boys fight. Do you know much about this boy?" Mace Windu asked.

    "I have spoken with the boy and watched clips and holograms of his other fights, I am quite sure that the Force is telling me that he is the one I should choose. While I watched him during the duel I felt a strange connection to him and as we were talking I am sure I felt the Force telling me that he is the boy I should take. Reeft is not filled with anger or impatience; his core is good. Why do you continue to question my decision?" Binn responded. Mace and the other Masters had been asking him question after question, trying to convince him Reeft was not a good candidate, or so that was how it seemed to him. In reality the Masters only wanted to be sure that Knight Ibes was sure he wanted this boy.

    "I will ask you no more." Mace picked up a data pad and hande it to Master Binn Ibes "This outlines the mission for you, if you have any questions feel free to ask, but your transport leaves tomorrow at dawn. You are dismissed." Binn Ibes and Reeft bowed before leaving. Already there seemed to be a connection between them.

*            *            *            *            *            *

    As Binn and Reeft walked out of the room Bruck walked in. He did not recognize the Jedi Knight and he was surprised that Reeft had been chosen but he didn't waste time thinking about it. He was here to speak with the counsel.

    Bruck walked into the center of the room. The masters were sitting in a semi circle, some in front of him and some on either side. He bowed respectfully and then, before Mace Windu could open his mouth he began to speak, "Masters of the Jedi Counsel, I know that I have been called before you to receive my next orders but before I receive them I wish to make a request."

    He waited, after a few seconds Yoda nodded and spoke, "Go on you shall."

     Bruck continued, "I know that nothing I say will change your minds about me fighting again. Already I have spoken with Master Yoda and he has denied me the privilege of a rematch. So I have come to you with a different request instead. I ask that you allow me to study to become a Jedi Healer instead of a Knight, or a farmer, or whatever you had chosen for me. I have spoken with the Healer Bash'ta and she has agreed to train me if you allow it." He stopped and looked at the members. Now he was getting slightly nervous. No one had stopped his speech and now they all seemed to be looking at him, staring through him almost.

    "This proposal is a very strange one for a Jedi Student. You are trained to accept what happens, but yet you have asked to change to a different training because of a single failure, but we will discuss it and will call you back when our decision is made." Mace Windu said, he was surprised at the proposal but of course didn't show it. "You will wait in your room for us to call you."

    Bruck only bowed, acknowledging that he was dismissed, and left the room. By the time he reached his room his body was trembling, he couldn't believe that what he'd done. Now he would never be a knight.  Tears threatened to come again but Bruck fought them, No! He wouldn't regret his decision! Being a healer would be better than a farmer. He
would just have to accept it as his destiny.

*            *            *            *            *            *

    A few hours later Bruck was again before the Jedi Counsel. He was nervous but, of course, he used his Jedi training in composure to appear calm, at least that's what he tried to do.

    "Bruck you realize what you have proposed to us is very important. It takes careful thought and consideration. We have to think about questions such as 'After you become a healers apprentice will you decide to change your mind again?' and 'How do we know that you will be committed to your healing training?' Do you understand that whatever this counsel has decided will be final and there will be no discussion towards changing the decision?" Mace Windu asked, his eyes boring into Bruck as though he were looking inside of him, reading his inner most thoughts.

    "Yes Master Windu, I understand the decision is final, and I will not attempt to change the minds of the Counsel." Bruck said with anoutward calm that he didn't feel. Inside his stomach was churning, his palms were beginning to get damp, yet he couldn't wipe them on his tunic, he didn't dare.

    "Bruck Chun, we have spoken with Healer Bash'ta and with various Jedi Trainers in the temple. The Masters of the Jedi Counsel have thought long and hard about what to do about your proposition. After much consideration and thought we have decided that we will accept your proposition on one condition," here he paused to let it sink in. Bruck could barely stay concentrated on what was being said but he forced his mind to clear, he didn't want to mess this up by becoming unfocused. "You will be on a probationary period for 1 month. Healer Bash'ta will report to us at the end of each week how you are doing and if there is any problem, whether it has to do with concentration, or obedience, then we will remove you from training and give you another mission. Is this understood?" Mace finished in a tone that demanded attention.

    Bruck nodded, "Yes Master Windu, I understand. I will do my very best to comply with the rules. Healer Bash'ta will have no problem with me at all."

    Master Windu only nodded and murmured, "We will see. You will report to Healer Bash'ta tomorrow at regular class time. You are dismissed."

    Bruck bowed, "Thank-You Masters." He said as he left the room.

    "I fear we are making a mistake in allowing that boy to become a healer. He has too much anger and pride. Bruck ought to be helping the Agricultural Corporation where he cannot lash out in anger against those around him. Now he will be in a place where he will be constantly reminded of his failure as a Jedi Knight, there will be much grief because of this boy I am afraid." Master Ki-Adi-Mundi said.

    "Allow the boy to try we must. Goodness I sense in him, do him good healing might." Yoda responded.

    "Yes, it may do him good, but it may also give him a chance to hurt those around him." Ki-Adi-Mundi said quietly.

*            *            *            *            *            *

    The next day, when everyone else was hurrying to classes Bruck was in the Clinic with Healer Bash'ta. She was explaining to him different creams and what they did. Bruck tried hard to keep his mind on what she was saying but he constantly found himself wondering what was going on in other classes.

    "Bruck!" Bash'ta said sharply, "You are not paying attention again, the Jedi Masters will not be pleased if you cannot keep your mind on what is going on. The Healers must always have their minds open and ready to concentrate. It could mean the difference between life or death."

    "Yes, Healer Bash'ta I know this. But," He paused, how was he going to tell her about the empty void he felt inside him when he couldn't explain it himself, "I'm sorry, I will try harder." Bruck lowered his head but brought it up again. He had not been shamed so he shouldn't act like it.

    Bash'ta's voice softened, "You miss the Jedi Classes. We will not do any more cream learning today." She picked a datapad off the shelf. It was a special datapad designed specifically for Healers to keep track of things with. The pages were divided into four sections and were blank, completely ready to be filled. "Here, you will use this to keep a record of all I tell you. Here in the first section you write the name of the ointment or cream. The next section is for its uses. In the third section you will list the ingredients and directions on how to make it in the fourth. Carry this datapad with you always, then you will never be at a loss for a cure." She picked another datapad off the shelf. This one was colored a dark blue and was designed with a high security password. "In this one though you must record you feelings and thoughts. I will not look at it, nor will anyone unless you allow him or her to. It is a good way to let go of all those emotions that sometimes get trapped up inside you. I know," She smiled, "I keep one too."

    "Thank-You Master. I will keep them always." Bruck said, smiling as he looked at his gifts.

    "Now, take these ointments, the ones I just explained to you and copy them into your book. Everything you will need to know is listed on the bottle. When you have finished that I have some other training for you that I think will keep your mind busy for a while." She smiled as she handed him the bottles.

    Bruck grinned a thank-you; anything that could keep his mind off the other students and their Jedi Training would be welcome.

*            *            *            *            *            *

    Reeft sat on his bed reading some materials Master Binn had given him. They were about the planet they were going to, Codani II. The books told of the race's history, government structure,population, anything you could think of was there. When Reeft had asked why, Binn had only replied that it was important to know as much as possible about a place before you arrived. That way you could be prepared for anything. Reeft had nodded it was a reasonable answer.

    "Are you finished Padawan?" Binn asked as Reeft set aside the book.

    "Yes Master, that book at least. I still have yet to read up on its government." He sighed. There was so much to remember that it all cluttered in his head and would sometimes jumble up together.

    Binn noticed Reeft was getting bored, "Come, we will work on your concentration skills before we retire. We have a long day ahead of us."

    Reeft grinned as he set aside the books. "What are we going to do Master?"

    Binn held up a small round ball about the size of his fist. "This exercise is going to work on your concentration and use of the Force. I want you to close your eyes, and using the Force, follow all instructions I give you." Reeft quickly obeyed, seeing it more as a game rather than a learning exercise. "Are you ready Padawan?"

    "Yes Master." Reeft said as he pulled the Force around him, ready to use it for whatever his Master willed.

    Binn smiled, the boy had no idea what he was going to do but he still trusted his Master completely, this was a good thing. "Okay Reeft, I want you to use the Force to pick up the ball that I am holding."

    Reeft quickly completed that task, /this is easy./ He thought to himself, after all, they had done this in his Force training classes while he was an initiate. As he waited for his Master to give him his next task he began to make the ball spin and bounce up and down, laughing at the image in his mind of a ball spinning around midair with no one holding it.

    "Reeft, please stay focused on what we are doing. I don't recall asking you to make the ball bounce midair." Binn said sternly. Obviously the boy's weakness was staying concentrated on what was going on.

    Reeft nearly dropped the ball when he stopped it from spinning. He hadn't expected his Master to rebuke him like that; apparently this wasn't a game. "I apologize Master. I will stay more focused now."

    Binn hated having to have crushed his high spirit like he did but the boy must learn to concentrate. Still, next time he would be more careful in choosing his words, "Since you have obviously mastered the ability to make the ball do as you please why don't we try something a little bit more complex. I want you to send the ball to Bant's room. Find a way to get the ball inside." Binn grinned slightly at his Padawan's surprised look. Obviously he hadn't expected to have an exercise like this. It would require him to be able to concentrate at all times so as not to loose his grip on the force and the ball, and at the same time think of a way to get the ball inside another initiates room. /Won't Bant be surprised when she sees a ball floating midair outside her room?/

    Reeft slowly began to move the ball towards the door of their apartment. He maneuvered it with ease around objects in the living room. When the ball reached the door he used the Force to press the button to open it. Once the door was open and the ball out of their room Reeft had a harder time concentrating. It was getting harder to sense obstacles that blocked his path as he maneuvered the ball towards the female students quarters. More than once he realized that he had hit something and he was forced to back track and find a way around the obstacle.

    Finally he reached Bant's quarters. It took every ounce of his strength to keep from dropping the ball. His brow was covered in sweat from the concentration when suddenly he realized he had no idea how to get the ball into Bant's room. He couldn't just open the door, that would be very rude and Bant probably wouldn't appreciate it anyway. Suddenly an idea came to him, and he nearly groaned as he realized how much extra concentration and strength it would take. Already he was exhausted but there was no way he planned on failing this exercise. Using the force he threw the ball against Bant's door and then, before it fell to the ground again he caught it and threw it again. Three times he threw it before the door opened and Bant stepped outside.

    Quickly Binn, who had installed a transmitter in the ball so that it would record and transmit what it saw, contacted Bant via comlink to inform her as to why there was a ball floating outside her door. As soon as Bant realized what was going on she quickly stepped aside to allow Reeft to bring the ball inside. Immediately it dropped onto her bed.

    Reeft slowly opened his eyes. He was completely exhausted from that exercise. Never before had he tried to do something so complex as that, but the exhaustion was a good one. The boy was happy that he could complete the exercise. "Is there anything else Master?" Reeft asked.

    Binn shook his head, "No Padawan, you did well. It took quite a bit of creative thinking to get the ball into Bant's room the way you did. You may retire if you wish, I'm going to go down and retrieve my ball from Bant. I'll return shortly."

    Reeft nodded, "Good night Master."

    "Good night Padawan." Binn said as he walked from the room.

   BRUCK'S POV

    Bruck was up at dawn, he knew that today was the day Reeft left with Master Binn and he was to watch with his own Master, the Healer Bash'ta. He really didn't want to watch as Reeft walked outside and saw the friends who had gathered there. He didn't want to watch as Reeft climbed aboard the ship and waved his last farewell, as the group of students yelled good-bye. All the students would hide their true emotions, put on happy and cheerful faces but Bruck didn't want to have to do that either. To stand out there and watch Reeft leaving as a Jedi Padawan Learner while he had to stay here, as a Healers Apprentice would hurt too much. Bruck was afraid he wouldn't be able to conceal is emotions and he didn't want to have to fight them away.

    Healer Bash'ta seemed to realize this, so she suggested that they stay inside and watch through the window. Bruck was glad of this; his Master was sensitive to his thoughts, a good sign. Emotions began to take over as he saw Reeft and Binn walking out onto the landing pad. Feelings of hurt, anger and pride came first, slowly they melted away and the feelings of sorrow, sadness and grief came over him. That could have been him walking out there, him that the students could be yelling their good-byes to. If he had only kept control of his anger and not allowed himself to become overconfident then it would havebeen him instead of Reeft that would be walking with Master Binn. Bruck would be a Padawan Learner and Reeft would have stayed here and continued his Jedi Training for a few more weeks before another Master came to watch him fight. Reeft would have had many more chances to become a Padawan but he; he had lost his last chance. Never again would he yield a lightsaber or participate in the Jedi Classes. Instead he would be here, in the Clinic learning about herbs and creams. Tears began to silently fall; they fell onto the ground unnoticed one at a time. He moved to wipe them away, he should be hiding his emotions, as the students outside were, but it was so hard!

    Bash'ta laid her hand on the boys shoulder; she knew how tough it
was on him. Although she had never gone through what he was going through she could feel his feelings. His pain was her pain, and every time a wave of sorrow washed over him she too felt it. This was good, she and her Intern had a strong connection, and it would grow stronger yet.

   //Do not wipe away your tears young apprentice, for it is not wrong to grieve. It is only wrong if you grieve because of pride, but you do not, you grieve for something that you worked for and then lost. There is nothing wrong or shameful with that.// Bash'ta didn't say it out loud but instead the sent it to Bruck's mind through the force. Their bond was strong and they could easily read one another's thoughts.

    Bruck nodded; maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all being a Healer. He would be able to help others, and besides, he seemed to have a close bond with his Master, maybe this had been his destiny after all, to be a Healer instead of a Knight. Anyway, he would not fight it but instead would put his whole mind and soul into his new job. It would be fun trying to see how fast he could learn about the new herbs and creams. Another tear fell unheeded but Bruck didn't move to wipe it away. He would let himself grieve first though, and then - then he would throw himself into his job, and he would show the Counsel that he was committed.

   // Do not do it to prove to the counsel, do it to prove it to yourself. The only one that you should ever need to prove anything to is yourself.// Bruck looked up as the words came into his mind unexpectedly. He hadn't realized she could read his thoughts and feelings so well, Bruck smiled briefly, this was going to work out just fine, he was sure of it now.

   REEFTS POV

    The next morning Reeft and Binn arose before dawn and quietly left the temple. None of the students were usually awake before dawn but when the two Jedi walked out onto the landing pad Reeft's eyes grew large at what he saw. There, assembled before them were all Reeft's friends from the Temple. The Jedi Masters stood there too, behind the students, to give last words of wisdom and advice. As they climbed aboard the transport the new Jedi Padawan's eyes got a little misty as his friends yelled their good-byes and good-lucks. He turned and waved one last wave before the ramp came up and the door closed, forever ending his Temple days, he was a Padawan now, and would remain so for many years until the Jedi Masters felt he was ready to become a Knights. Then he would return to the Temple to choose his own Padawan. But by that time all his friends would have left the temple, and it would be many years before Reeft saw them again and many things would change, but one thing would remain forever, their bond of friendship.
