First time host family? Not to worry. With an open heart and plenty of patience, anyone can become a first class host family. We want you to enjoy your experience as much as possible, so to help the learning process along a little, we're sharing some pearls of wisdom from those who know best - previous host families.
Turn on the closed captioning on your TV; sometimes it's easier to read English than it is to hear it.
When asked to "say again please," repeat yourself verbatim. Don't keep changing your phrase or question; chances are she only missed one or two words the first time.
"Help yourself" is a concept that takes quite a while to understand, so keep reiterating it.
Keep pencil and paper handy, especially when doing homework. If you're having trouble communicating, write it down or draw it out.
When packing sack lunches, most students would prefer a bottle of water or unsweetened ice tea. Juice boxes or Capri Sun pouches usually end up in the garbage can unopened.
Every student brings an English-Japanese dictionary. Learn to love it! Don't be afraid to ask your student to go get her dictionary. (Use the universal hand sign for book - never goes wrong!) |
