Obesity is a Disease

(NIH Consensus Statement, 1985)

We owe it to the people that are afflicted with this disease called Obesity to let them know that:

~Diets and Diet Programs, whether individual or commercial, medically supervised or not, have a greater than 95% failure rate in the long run.

~Pills do not work.

~Behavior modification programs do not work.

~Losing weight (and keeping it off) is almost impossible for the severly obese and moderately obese by any modern means, with the exception of surgery.

~Obesity is a severe medical problem, not a benign condition.  Genetic predisposition and behavior are major factors of this disease.

~Do you know that there are hundreds of weight loss programs, but only 5% of those programs by themselves benefit the severly overweight?

~Another interesting point is that only 1% of obese patients that loose a significant amount of weight with weight loss programs will keep it off.

~Surgery is the only viable solution for the severly overweight (BMI 40 or above).
