Spanish Review Games

Materials:  2 fly swatters, chalk, 3 pieces of paper, candy

Background Knowledge:  Students have their Term exams next week, so during the class period we are going to review for their exam using fun and interactive games.  The students already know the vocabulary and the verb conjugations, but they need a good review in order to prepare for the big test.  Students also already know how to write out numbers in Spanish along with greetings for conversations.

Objectives:  Students will be able to identify correct verb conjugations and forms for “ar” “er” “ir” and irregular verbs.

Students will be able to identify greetings in Spanish.

Students will be able to spell numbers in Spanish.

Anticipatory Set:  Teacher will ask students what Spanish verbs they already know from this term, and they will be written on the board.  Teacher will call one student to come up and make a chart of the verb conjugations of an “ar” verb, another student for an “er” conjugation, and a third student for an “ir” verb.  One student will be chosen to write the verb tenses for an irregular verb.  Teacher will review the simple “T” chart formation of the verb to prepare the students for the game.

Lesson

Review Game #1:  Teacher will explain the game “Verb Tag” to the students before they move into the appropriate rows.  Teacher will number class off into 3 teams of 6, and the students will listen to instructions before moving.

“Verb Tag” is a game that is used to reinforce the conjugations of verb formations.  This will greatly help the students review and remember how to use the verbs for the exam the following week, and it will provide an interactive learning environment where students work together towards the common goal of mastering Spanish verbs.

Instructions:  First, each student sits in a row on his or her team, and the rows face the board.  The teacher holds three pieces of paper, each one with a number on it one through three.  The teacher will say a verb in English, and the person at the front of each row or team will go to the board and write the verb in Spanish.  Then when the first person from the team sits down, the second person will go to the board and write the “yo” form of the verb.  Then the third person from the team goes to the board and does the “tu,” and this pattern will continue until all members of the team have gone to the board to write the correct form of the verb on the board.  The last person to go on each team will have to make sure that all verbs are spelled correctly, and that there are no errors in conjugation.  Once the team is finished, the last person to go will take a paper with a number on it from the teacher and sit down.  After all 3 teams have finished the verb conjugation on the board, and they have grabbed a piece of paper from the teacher, the teacher will check the verbs written on the board to see if they are correct or not.  If the verbs are all correct, the team with the number 1 will get 3 points, the team that had the paper with a number 2 on it will get 2 points, and the group that had number three on the paper will get one point.

Object:  For each team to try and get the most points by the end of the game.

Depending on how fast students move in the game, and also how well they like the game, the length of the game will vary.  If students seem to like the game, then it can go longer.  If the teacher notices that students are not enjoying it, or it is getting to be boring, then the game will finish and they will move onto the next review game.

The team with the most points at the end of verb tag will win candy that will be passed out.

Review Game #2:  Fly Swatter Game

Object:  The object of the fly swatter game is for students to review vocabulary and the spellings of numbers in Spanish.

There will be 2 different versions of the fly swatter game to be played for students to review for the exam, one with numbers and the other with Spanish greetings.

Instructions:  Teacher will number students off to create groups.  Students will be divided into teams of 3-4 people, which means there should end up being about 6 teams, and each team will sit together.  As the students are moving to sit in their appropriate seats, the teacher will write out the Spanish spellings of words on the board, which is now going to be the game board for this activity.

Rules:  The teacher will explain the rules to the students that the fly swatters can only be used to touch the board.  Students are not allowed to touch each other with the swatters, or the game will be over.  The teacher is the ultimate judge in the game, so whatever she says goes.  The fly swatter that is on the bottom wins the point.  The students are not allowed to cross the imaginary boundary lines that the teacher will set up with the chalkboard.

Each person in the class will get to participate at least once, and they will work towards earning points for his or her team.

The teacher will demonstrate a practice round of the fly swatter game with a volunteer from the classroom.  Each of the items on the board will be reviewed with the students before the game begins.

The teacher will call upon one person from team one, and another person from team two to come to the board and get a fly swatter.  On the board, there will be 9-12 numbers written out, and the teacher will say the number in English, and the student will have to match it up with the Spanish spelling and slap the board with the fly swatter on the correct spot.  The first person to do that correctly will get a point for his or her team.  There will be 3 questions asked of each pair at the board, and then the person who scored 2 or 3 will get a point for his or her team.  The game will continue like this until all of the teams have participated and the students have all had a chance to come to the board to play the fly swatter game.

After each student has participated in the numbers version of the Fly Swatter Game, the teacher will erase the board and write up Spanish greetings.  Then the game will repeat itself and students will come to the board to play the game using Spanish greetings.

At the end of the game, whichever team has the most points will win candy for his or her group.

Backup Activity:  If students are out of control, or if there is extra time in the class period, the teacher will ask the students to write out verb charts for each verb that was played in the Verb Tag game.

Wrap-Up:  Teacher will ask students if there are any questions about verb conjugation, numbers, or greetings.  Teacher will also ask if there are any questions for the exam.
