Anticipatory Set:
Today we are going to continue our work on percents. We are going to review the worksheet that you were working on in our previous class and it will also guide us into more methods of calculating percentages. Some of the work that we will complete today will show you how you may use percentages in the real world.
Teaching Strategies:
· Whole-Group Instruction - A direct instructional method. The teacher talks with the purpose of transmitting information.
· Checking for Understanding – For use throughout a lesson when the teacher is providing direct instruction.
Activities:
1. Review the Percentage worksheet from the previous class period.
§ Instruct how to write percents as fractions in simplest form; how to write a percent as a decimal; how to write a decimal as a percent; how to write a fraction as a percent.
2. Continue work with estimating/guessing using mental math/benchmarks.
§ Introduce benchmarks (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%)
§ Use of fractions when calculating discounts
3. Write decimals, percents, and fractions on the board and have students put them in order.
4. Pass out class work; students will complete worksheet and may use their notes/book.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed based on their ability to remain on-task while working on their opening activities. Students will also be assessed on whether they take the initiative to ask for help when it is clear that they need teacher assistance. Both of these will be observed and considered while making the formal assessment. The formal assessment will take place upon grading the individual CLASSWORK.
