Anticipatory Set:
Before we begin today’s lesson, I would like to start with making a seating chart so that I can begin to learn all of your names and address you properly during class while we continue some of your prior work with percents.
Teaching Strategies:
· Calculator - For use in computation, or for demonstrating skill with the calculator.
· Whole-Group Instruction - A direct instructional method. The teacher talks with the purpose of transmitting information.
· Checking for Understanding – For use throughout a lesson when the teacher is providing direct instruction.
Activities:
1. Begin by making a class-seating chart.
2. Ask students if they would like to participate in a email pen-pal program.
3. Pass out graph paper. Have students make three 10x10 boxes and have them fill in percentages.
4. Move to activity in Maths 2 – estimating/guessing using mental math/benchmarks.
5. Move to activity in Maths 1 – changing decimals to percentages.
6. Have students complete a survey of percentages of countries where students are from.
7. Pass out worksheet; students will complete worksheet and may work with each other.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed based on their ability to remain on-task while working on their opening activities. Students will also be assessed on whether they take the initiative to ask for help when it is clear that they need teacher assistance. Both of these will be observed and considered while making the formal assessment. The formal assessment will take place upon grading the individual student work.
