Parents, the best advice that I can give you upon finding out that your child has Autism is ADVOCATE!  You will be your child's only defender sometimes, and there will be times that you are going to have to fight for what is best for your child.  I also strongly encourage you (though I know you will) to always keep your child's best interest at heart.  He or she will need you to make sure that they get the best services possibile! Here is a website that might answer some of your questions!
Upon receiving a diagnosis of Autism, early intervention is key.  I see many children with Autism come through my school, and you can tell the difference between the children who have been receiving services, and those who haven't.  All states have early intervention agencies that will pay for these services, and the local school system starts providing services at age 3.  Children with Autism often need a variety of services, including (but not limited to) Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.  There is also a type of therapy called ABA that has been proven to be successful.  Many parents put their children on special diets that are Gluten Free.  Here is a link to some information on special diets for children with Autism.  Another good piece of advice is to educate yourself.  Go to workshops!  Many times, the local school system might even pay for you to go.  I've learned so much from attending workshops!  I also reccomend that you get involved with a parent support group.  There are multiple organizations listed on my organizations page, hopefully you can find one there that will suit your needs.  I can imagine that if you have recently received a diagnosis, that it seems like the world is coming to an end.  Let me assure you that it's not! I have seen grown adults with Autism that have been functioning members of society.  It is even speculated that both Albert Einstein and Mozart had Autism.  Think of the contributions they made!   If you have any questions, feel free to email me!  If I dont' know the answer, I will do my best to direct you to someone who can help you.  I wish you luck on your journey, and keep you in my prayers.  A child with Autism can be a blessing.  You never know what kind of perspective they hold, and it never fails that they'll put a smile on your face!
